Series 3 chassis paint or Underseal ?

Evening All,
Quick Question.... before replacing the engine I have wire brushed the chassis in the engine bay and given it a good coating of red oxide I would like to know what is the best top coat.... I have looked at past post's and can see lots of comments, but no-one has mentioned spray on under-seal?

I'm told under-seal gives a coating that wont chip like paint will.... but if that's the case why sell chassis paint??? Life is never simple any more :-(

Chassis black would be for vehicles that never had any underseal and the rivet counters cannot put underseal on a car that never had it from the factory. They never seem to redo the fresh from the factory rust/leaks though, funny that.

When you paint the chassis make sure the paint you use is fuel/oil resistant, so no hammerite. I had no idea how crap Hammerite had become until I bought a tin to use on my cleaned up fuel tank, I used the whole tin just to cover the red oxide primer and then found out its not fuel resistant ARRRGH! I am hoping that the diesel is less prone to removing the paint than petrol. I will be using Origiplate on everything else, it's an etch paint like the stuff painted on by the factory. I have a mate that does bike restorations and he wont use anything else now.

OK so to recap are we saying underseal on the chassis and Origiplate (a paint) on everything else ?

can anyone suggest a underseal that will cover read oxide ?

I would not use underseal, it tends to chip/peel and let water in that starts the rust process again. I tend to use an oil based black paint and an annual pressure wash followed when dry by spraying on black waxoil. The waxoil looks very good, I use it warm and thinned slightly with white spirit and spray on with a parafin gun. I spray into the chassis box section through the drain holes and into the bulkhead by removing a door hinge screw as well as all the chassis outer plus the springs and axle's ETC.

I was just looking at the HAMMERITE WAXOYL UNDERBODY SEAL.... it should cover the red oxide OK and I assume just before winter I could give everything a jet wash and waxoyl over the top of it?
I'd opt for a brush over a spray as i can probably get it on thicker in problem areas.

Any other suggestions or should I go shopping now

Ive got 12 coats of paint in total on my Chassis......six Hammerite no1......six rollered Hammerite Hammered... looks like its been sprayed on..very pleased....any chips can be readily seen and promptly dealt with.......wouldn't dream of using underseal....even that with waxoyl added.....you just cant see whats happening over time to the metal...and it can lose adhesion and trap water....and its also used by bodgers to cover up shoddy repairs.......Chris

I recommend half an inch of underseal. It hides the rot from the MOT chap.

OK so how’s this for an idea…

Ill cover the red Oxide with a good layer of high gloss black metal paint….. Then if I notice stone chips and the like I can rub down redo the red oxide then try something different!

I can underseal over paint, I don’t think I could paint over underseal!!!!

Some of the older paint was green, never come across a green chassis but it’s going back to black this weekend LOL

Don't do waxoyl - use Dynax UB (floors) and S50 (cavities) instead and you won't need to do it again next year when the waxoyl has given the rust a good head start for you...

I use black dinitrol, it comes ready in schutz containers and sprays easily with sealey disposable schutz heads so no cleaning up.

I would prefer to use the bilt hamber stuff but they only seem to do brown or clear and they don't produce it in schutz containers - I even asked them to .

thinking of using the sump oil out of the s3 diesel this time around with some diesel mixed in, use that on springs at the mo, seems to work a treat

ive been looking at tractor paint, tractol is very good

Sparex or Vapourmatic tractor paints is what use, both are synthetic enamels, can be brushed or sprayed [ with thinner ] A tough paint that does not come off with ease even if you dent a panel as it remains a bit flexible.
As well as black some common Land rover body colours available like my 90's Windjamer blue
