Chassis numberwill do the job

ive got a 2001 Discovery and want to register it in another country. The chassis number is no longer visible and it can’t be registered without it. Can i simply restamp it? Anyone know what size the numbers are? Machine mart sell sets of stamps so hope they
 
The OE chassis no. lettering is approx 20mm high if I remember correctly from ours & is comprised of numerous individual "dot" stamps. Don't think you'll be creating anything like it without using a single centre punch.
Have you tried cleaning the right rear chassis rail back to bare steel with eg a flap wheel or similar to find the OE no.?
On ours (before chassis leg replacement) , it was there after taking off the underseal & surface rust.

I re-installed the no. on the new leg with a centre punch, having created a paper template of the correct dimensions.
Maybe overkill - but it looked good lol

When I had my D2 re-chassied, I asked for the section carrying the number to be saved before the old one was scrapped. This was done but seeing the number was very, very difficult, even with the 'saved piece' under a powerful light!
 
In which country do you want to register? Be careful, because it can be forbidden to do it by yourself. In hungary if you do such thing by yourself it is illegal. You have to take the car to a local authority who checks it and gives a new number stamped on a plate riveted to the chassis.
 
Where did you get your chassis done? Need to do mine, but nobody local to us seems very keen.
Chris Bowler, Cambrian 4 X 4 Farm,Lampeter. He has been doing them since Richards started making them them and I THINK he is a recommended fitter by Richards now. Google him and he is on Facebook too. Very highly recommended.
 
I've got a 1994 Discovery 1 where the chassis number is stamped between the steering box bolts. It is now completely unreadable. Am I likely to find it stamped anywhere else as mentioned in post number 2 by Pawl? The manual only describes it as being located between the steering box bolts. I ask because when I present it to VOSA for a BIVA when it's transformation into a Sahara is complete this will definitely be a problem.

Of course I suppose I could restamp it as Pawl has done but I don't think I'm skilful enough to make it look original and it might look suspicious having a shiny new section on an old chassis with a new looking stamp.

Hi Doll, Looked on your info and nothing coming up!! no tel. no. no contact at all. Could you please spare the time to see if they are still in business .
 
Yes, he is defo still in business and has his own 4x4 'farm' on his very rural property - you need a 4x4 to reach it. He does not have a website but is very active on facebook.

Contact made, thank you. My chassis is no where near as bad as yours, and would probably pass an mot for another few years.But its not just the Disco getting old, Im passed 70 myself so if I dont do it now I never will.

I know the feeling! I had mine done about 5 years ago when I was your age and I'm now approaching 76 so glad I had it done then.:) I can very highly recommend Chris but if you go there remember it is way out in the country along a very rough track - but it's worth it!
My chassis didn't look too bad until it was removed!!!!! A lot of the problem was hidden. It was my mechanic who recommended him as he knew mine would not get through the next year's MOT. One big advantage of living so rurally in Land Rover country is the number of very good Landy mechanics with their own businesses and they all know each other and who to recommend to do a good job ( and who to avoid).
