Hi All, need your help in deciding the best course of action for my much loved Defender 90. I've had her over three years and use her in connection with my stables. She is a 1986 swb 2.5 petrol with a genuine 60k on the clock. I bought it from a farmer who owned it from new, it still has all the original tool kit and all receipts including the original bill of sale.
To get to the point she recently failed her MOT, mainly due to corrosion on the rear cross member and spring mounts. My dilemma now is whether to pay a garage to have the work done, but probably be faced with having more work done when next test is due. Or to scrap the old girl and get a replacement or have the chasis completely replaced with a galvanized one.
Your comments and suggestions would be most welcome. For the record I do not have the technical knowledge to carry out the work myself.
Thanks

if the engine / mechanicals / body / bulkhead are in reasonable to good shape, got to be worth having the chassis swapped, I know they're around a grand supply only, but haven't a clue as to the labour costs.

even if it costs another grand on top, what kind of 90 will 2 grand buy ? chances are chassis will be in similar condition, along with maybe some mechanical issues.

my vote is go for chassis swap, as long as rest of vehicle is in reasonable condition.

my vote would be to spend a few hundred quid on a tidy MIG, some tools and a new crossmember

spend a few relaxing weekends messing about learning how to unbolt things and weld

and then enjoy a couple of weeks in costadellhangover on the money you will have saved by DIYing

Sean's right. There really isn't anything you can't do yourself. You'll save a bloody fortune and you'll end up with a good landy that you know inside out. Worth doing even if it takes a while.

Hi thanks for all your replies, a big help! Think the guy on ebay is offering a great deal, my landy 90 runs like a dream and once the chasis is sorted think she will provide amny more years of service so worth spending the money on. She is all bought and paid for at the moment, so I'll get to keep a Landy I know and trust!
Thanks again.
