Hi needing a little help. I recently acquired a v8 engine installed in an 88. It is a rover v8 with a conversion to weber 38dgas with manual choke.

It had sat so long I fitted a manual priming bulb and new inline filter. The electric fuel pump is clicking.

If I squeeze the bulb I can hear petrol spray out into the carb. When I turn it over it will fire but them quickly die. I think it is running on the fuel I squeezed in rather than drawing from the pumped fuel.

How much pressure should the electric pump be pushing fuel to the carb at and if the pump is indeed pumping, it certainly spilled petrol onto the engine when I had the line disconnected and energised the pump, what might it be? I took the top of the carb off and the float looks intact and the basin had fuel in.

I'm diesel up to this point so steep learning curve for me. Any ideas appreciated.

Have you checked air filter and any other filter fitted in fuel line if its been stood i would strip and clean carb.was it running before lay up?

Guess that you may have sorted this out by now but if not, it's worth checking for an inlet manifold leak (perhaps broken gasket/heat shield or missing breather hose) or a blocked idle jet. Disclaimer: I've never had a V8 but i once had a volvo with a downdraught weber

If hes sorted it ...an update would be good...might help someone else who asks for help with same fault...
