Car won't start after new fuel filter done

Hi I'm Susan from Newcastle Australia I tried to introduce myself but couldn't work out how to..I have 2 questions about my new to me 2004 facelift td freelander well I have a lot actually but have been studying this forum and watching utubes first we have changed every filter possible + oil change the car was running ok except blowing loads of smoke on inclines and taking off from lights but not on first start up.. the MIL was on from when I bought it was told it came on when tensioner belt was renewed..It was starting first kick till fuel filter change it was under rear wheel arch he emptied canister next to filter and pump it was pretty clean a bit of gunk it went back in dry as did the new filter and he is positive it went in right way so we don't know why it won't start now..Thank you for any help

I'd pre fill diesel filters where applicable to prevent air in the system..

Never done a 'lander so can't say..

but Duratorque diesel fords will not run unless the fuel filter is primed before installation.
