Hi, Ive got a rilsan coated heavy duty A bar on my 110 but the rilsan has been scuffed in a couple of places and because I didnt try to repair it water has got in and rust is lifting the coating in a couple of places. Having gone through the process of stripping off rilsan from my roof rack and painting it (not very sucessfully as I have to keep sorting out the rust coming through) I want to avoid doing the same to the A bar. Sooo.... can you repair rilsan, if I cut away the section hat is damaged and sort out the rust can it be filled back in again and not look like an obvious bodge repair?

I've been there with that Rilsan stuff bracking up on parts of my rear lamp guards, in view of reprinting with metal paint it was easy stripping the damaged plastic off, but looked they rubbish when painted with the mix of paint and plastic so I stripped every thing off but the only way to remove the good plastic bits quickly was to burn it off.

I painted the lamp guards but the end results was still rubbish so after spending most of a weekend on the task I binned the guards and went and purchased a new set.

A few years ago a mate took his RRc bull bar to a company on some indi estate in Kent, he had all ready striped all the old stuff off, so all they had to do was clean and dipped the bar in a hot industrial size tank of Rilsan, when done it was better than new berry smooth and shiny all for just £20, what I should have done in the first place.

Now 10 years on and due to the same rusty issue i'v just replaced the lamp guards again. :(

Ive always known Rilsan as a plasticote used on metal parts like bumpers and roofracks cos its more resistant to damage than paint

Maybe you need to improve your painting techique?
If properly prepped, primed and topcoated, a good paint coating should last 5-10 years on steel in British conditions.
Are you rubbing down thoroughly, and washing and drying thoroughly after the rubdown stage?
And are you using a quality paint and primer, or Hammerite or similar rubbish?

Ok guilty. Did prep and undercoat but used hammerite but roof racks problems are the drain holes have allowed rust to get inside and it puckers up round those holes after a while. filling the tubes with waxoyl is a pain in the arse

I can see the roofrack might be an issue. Might be an idea to remove that and send it off to be galvanised.
I did my lightguards with paint, it lasted pretty well.

Yeah just looking for an easy way out as Im not looking forward to peeling the current stuff off. Mind you if I do paint it the bumper and A bar will match

I think if you are looking for an A1 finish afterwards then your best option is find a local powder coater and have them blast completely to clean metal and recoat.

On a roof rack would probably be worthwhile on an A bar, may be questionable.

Cheers

If you mean the roofrack, the galv company would prep it.

If you mean my light guards, I didn't remove it all, just rubbed down and painted the rusty patches, left the rest.

Just got a quote from a powder coater to do a 6 foot long roof rack, from a 110 , £95 plus VAT, surprised at the price as they also do huge industrial stair bits and such
So roof rack without any clamping methods, around 100 plus costs of shipping or me fetching it Roof bars to fit rack on, 2 sets, 100 again, shotblast and powder coat rack, 320, I don't know what re-galvanising would cost, but bearing in mind that a new roof rack would start around 400,
