Unidentified 'tapping' noise from disco engine, originating from right side, rear end.
Very noticable at tickover, appears to fade away at higher revs.
Sounds like exhaust gasket leak, poorly adjusted tappet or broken belt slap but can't find source of noise.
Engine is pulling fine.
Lever on fuel lift pump is sloppy with engine running or stopped, is this normal?
Any ideals you guys? Very reluctant to travel far from home until I can sort this problem.
Any help very much appreciated.
Thanks

Thanks Treworgey 90
Yes 300 TDi
What is the likely cause?
Servicable? Or replacement needed?

Some people reckon they're repairable - there was a thread on here back along, try a search.
Because I'm lazy and not on too tight a budget, I'd replace it with a new one - about £70 I think.
DO NOT REPLACE IT WITH A BRITPART ONE!
Get a genuine or OEM one.

Thanks for the info guys, will source a new pump. In the mean time, will take the old one out and see why it has failed (120000kms)

if the head of the piston is pitted where it meets the cam shaft it can be filled with chemical metal and sanded down, brother in law did his 2 years ago an is still working and no knocking yet

the vac pump piston that is in constant contact with the cam shaft is worn away over time due to friction! thus fill the ****er in an jobs a ****in good un

Ah! Vacuum pump piston :D. You had me worried for a minute or so :D.

no worries mate! i didn't explain it that well to start with:eek:

he's also used chemical metal in the engine block too to fill pits in the head gasket mating surface an it's still going strong,
if it had been me i'd have done it properly, but the brother in law is as tight as a duck arse:rolleyes:
