I use castrol gtx high mileage in the 3.5...

It's a 15-40 so its nice and thick but not like syrup. I was using 5-30 to try to flush some ****e outa the engine, but it was far too thin, making her tappity and very leaky.

The 15-40 is much better, tappets are silent and the rear main seal was drier (although I'm changing it now anyway)

And I buy it for 12.99+vat for 5 litres.

I like it :)

Most oil manufactures meet or better the Land Rovers spec.
Use 10w40 to give the extra protection in winter, mineral or part/semi synthetic it's up you, part/semi or fully synthetic oil stays cleaner looking (light brown) for longer.
I have even tried Mobil 1 = 0w40 but didn't see any additional benefit in the winter.

I have never bought my oil on-line, I just go to Halfords and get their brand or Makro cash and carry and use GTX which they sell cheap..

Know anyone with a Costco card? I was in there at the weekend and noticed they did 20L of Chevron 10w40 semi for £36 :D Failing that i bought 25L of Carplan 10w40 from my local Motor Parts Direct for around £55. Thats 3 changes plus some for topping up and works out to around £18 a change

Hi, I do a lot online because of where i live and what i drive, quite often buying online is cheaper (+ more choice) even with the postage. Where i live there is very little competition and therefore people can charge a little over the asking price for things + more than likely they dont stock everything and will have to order specific things in which means coming back (ie they stock an engine oil but not GTX), after i have waited for it to come in, driven there and payed more i may as well have just ordered online, it means i dont have to go out of my way and i get what i want but does mean i normally have to plan at least a few days ahead. (as i do most of my trucks work on a wednesday afternoon or the weekends this is rarely a problem.

So no Halfords then in the Welsh seaside resort of Barmouth then. :)

You don't have to use GTX or Castrol I was using Halfords brand which was Texaco, now I understand it's changed and is either Esso or Comma depends who you speak too, anyway my disco has just had a full service by an indi (to get that service book stamped) so now on Texaco 10w40 mineral then it will be back to the Halfords part-synthetic in two years time.
If you go and by your oil in bulk remember that the shelf life is only three years according to the manufactures, ok if you do the milage and change your oil every year.

You are suppose to change it every year as a minimum

Oh and its fine to use Diesel oil in petrol engines

NO, Minimum is according to the disco's service interval plan it's 6000miles or 6 months, MPI disco it's 12 months.

Although Diesel oil can be used it's a detergent therefore designed to clean a diesel engine, petrol engines are clean if maintained, so no benefit using the stuff.

As I have a "weekend disco" so under 3000 miles a year I do an oil change every two years without any problems :)

You do realise the 6000miles or 6 months is what happens first ;) So if you are doing 3000 miles a year you should be changing the oil every 6 months :)

And yes diesel oils contain more detergents due to the high level of soot a diesel produces but they will do no harm if used in a petrol engine (I use a diesel oil in my 200sx)

Did that first for 4 years at a main dealer because of the warranty but now for the last 9 years the engine oil is changed 6000 miles or two years which ever comes first, same with the T box and axles.
The auto box fluid and filter has just been changed and that's after 9 years. Coolent every 5 years if it needs it or not. :)
As I dont tow or go off road so every thing still runs sweet as it should with the low mileage. :)

Fair enough but there is no way i would leaving oil in an engine for 2 years  Manufacturers recommend service intervals for a reason you know. Although since that engine was developed oil tech has progressed in leaps and bounds so I would suggest 6000 miles or 12 months if you are using a good quality oil and not that tractor crap people seem keen to use on here :p

The old engines probably prefer tractor crap!

I can't decide whether to stick with 15-40 or go to 20-50 classic oil that everyone raves about.

Would do wonders for my oil pressure no doubt (oil light starts flickering on low rev manoeuvres when off roading and hot)

Hmmm, cant decide.

I seem to change the oil every few months or so in the disco, just whenever it gets mucky. Gotta keep on top of the gunge!!
