We have only had our first LR for about six months now. Apart from lots of suspension bushes, a universal joint, clutch slave cylinder and part of the exhaust its been completely reliable ! All forgiven. Until now...

What are the odds on bent valves do you think ? Is it worth trying a compression test to see if I am not as unlucky as all that ? At least I would know which cylinders to go at I suppose. Is it even possible to do a compression test with a staitc camshaft?

I guess the pushrods are bent and maybe the odd rocker.

Or do I just get the head off and get stuck in ?

you cant do a comp test with no camshaft turning.
just take the head off and have a looksee.

im afraid to tell you that the odds are, it wont be pretty.

no point in doing any further damage by turning the engine over either.

and be prepared to remove the whole engine after the head, too.
:(

Sorry to hear about that.

I think your going to need to take the engine out and be ready for a bit of a rebuild. Do you know when the belt was last changed?

stop! think! if yer engine is gonna get damaged by a broken cambelt what do you think will happen if you turn it over with a 'static ' camshaft.

Thank you for your comments. We have only had it 6 months and it is now blindingly obvious that the first job is a new cambelt were the history is not proven. Boefre it broke it was still obvious !

The engine is a heavy smoker on start and by the looks of the last few MOTs was hard work to get past the emissions. A previous leakdown test pointed to bore wear on some cyls.

I think I'll get another 19J off ebay and rebuild this one in the garage before the cambelt breaks on the next lump. 200tdi's seem a lot more costly and generally off discos with the turbo position issue.

I see I can get a first class recon engine for near £2k plus vat.....Perhaps I'll try to find some thread on a disco lump into 110.

Thanks, Andy.

I know a guy with 3 19J's... they can be brought down from Stornoway to wherever you need it. They all start no problem, good engines.

If your intrested let me know.

I am sure a pallet line would ship it from A to B for you.

I'm down in Surrey so a round trip to Glasgow is about 900miles with a trailer.

The best price for a full 're-manufactured' full engine was from 'Engines Direct' / Rivermead Engineering at £995 plus VAT. I added the word 'problems' after the supplier name and the first hit from Google was BBC Watchdog saying beware !!.

A place in Wales (LEGS) will do what sounds like a proper job for £1400 plus VAT.

Anything off Ebay will likely be in need of a rebuild too unless I'm extremely lucky and am I lucky?...err.. Especially a 19J. Else why take it out ? So the toss up is get the credit card out or spend the next few weeks in the garage each night. Take me that long to justclear the space from motorbikes and rotavators..
