1997 disco 1 300tdi manual

its me again with the next question lined up! (nothing goes straight forward for me! ;) )

drivers side calliper is off the disc at the moment with the brake line attached pads are out too.

been looking at replacing my brake pads and discs I notice I got 4 pistons on the right hand drivers side calliper, 3 of them are fully ejected but one is stuck halfway.

so I've pumped the brakes to see if the stuck one will come out too but it doesn't and one of the ejected pistons leaks brake fluid everywhere.

is this time for a new calliper or can I overhaul it with the new piston and seal kit? the fluid is leaking out of one of the ejected pistons from what I see and not the pipe or anything else.

I assume I would have to overhaul/replace both callipers on same axle too even if one seems to be ok?

also forgot to mention the left hand passanger side calliper is off the disc but with brake pads still in, haven't looked at this one yet!

thank you all :D

again! ;)

Callipers can be overhauled, as for can u do the job that will depend on your skills or u can take the easy option and purchase a new replacement. Only the faulty calliper has to be overhauled/replaced assuming the other is in perfect condition.

But how will he know it's in perfect condition? I always overhaul in pairs now, but that is only after it being brought to my attention at mot time that the calipers weren't pulling evenly even though I thought the one I didn't do looked And felt perfect. Pistons and seals are easy enough to do just take your time and accept you will bend at least one of the metal rings at some point so buy enough to cater for this. Keep everything really clean and take your time. The cost of refurbed ones isn't bad but I like to tinker and the caliper bodies on mine are in good nick so I refurbed, but financially it isn't that much cheaper once you have bought all the bits.

thank you both, ive bought the caliper overhaul kit today for both sides!, and a spare brake pipe incase one breaks! so gonna look at that tomorrow.

needs to be back on the road by tomorrow evening! got all the parts now though and a day off work tommorow to sort the callipers out! :)

still gotta get the hubs put back together, attatch new brake discs, replace the stub axle on one side, then fit the hubs and check there both working nicely with the new bearings, and take the calipers off :) thats the plan for tonight!

tomorrow I will just have to sort the brake calipers out, put in the new pads bleed and put wheels back on and start her up! I got all day tommorow for that thankfully!

wish me luck :)
