Hello, I'm looking to buy my second disco. I had my last one for over 10 years.
Slightly worried about buying a heap of crap, so I was wondering if anyone could tell me the things I need to look out for?
Or are there people I should get to check the car over?
I'm looking at discovery 2, diesel, automatic. Between £2000 and £3000.
Thanks in advance!

Look for enthusiasts trading to D3 or D4, also regularly for sale on D2BC.

Be prepared to pay more for a better one.

If you see the words galvanised chassis, or AMC head, be prepared to spend nearer £5000.

ES have loads of toys, make sure they all work.

Good points would be

Centre diff lock
Recent service.
Recent air bags
BSP converted ACE systems
Dynachip visits, or any other respected tuner
HDTC if remapped

A fully sorted D2 can still be worth around £7000

16" wheels are easier to find tyres for.

IMO biggest problem is the chassis, esp. rear section. For some reason they were made of thinner gauge steel than D1 and although the bodywork was well protected they were still rolled off the production line with no protection on the chassis.

I wouldn't be worried - buying a heap of crap is easy if you look for an old Disco.

Take a hammer and a screwdriver and prod everything that looks suspect - if you don't spend a good 20 minutes checking the chassis you only have yourself to blame. Check ACE if fitted, look for the three amigos, road test it and make sure that the 3 amigos don't appear, airbags, check the TC lockups work in all gears not just top. Check for damage from toerags yanking the headlamps out..

Is just a heap of trouble. Sorry but whatever you buy given the fandango stuff that's all at the end of its design life and not easily fixed.
