Hi All,
Moving from a German estate car to hopefully an LR4...I've got a relatively small budget of around 7/8 grand. I've seen a HSE, 2010 with 170,000 on the clock. It's got a full LR service history, 2 previous owners and had the cambelt changed. This one is for 7.5k.

I did come across an XS, for 5.5K, but the seller said that it's got an oil leak, and that while it runs fine at the moment, it would be better to have it recovered in case it did damage the engine. 1 previous owner, 190k miles and in amazing condition, from a cosmetic point of view at least.

How expensive would an oil leak be to fix at an independent garage? Is it worth buying it for 5ish grand, and then having it fixed or could it end up costing much more than my budget.

I only need this car for 2 or 3 years at the most...

Thanks in advance guys!

Hi and welcome to the asylum

if I may add, plse pop over to the introduction section as well :)

ref ur oil leak, do u know where about it’s coming from as indeed that would dictate of costs etc

hope that helps

If the car you are buying is at the top end of your budget, don't got there, as if it needs money spending you are screwed.
If you only need 2/3 years I would say get a D3, mcuh cheaper and some nice cars out there.
Any high mileags land rover is a gamble.

Gap IID tool is also essential kit, 400 quid though.

One of many on ebay, 2008 6.5k high spec 128k miles, https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Land-Rov...829102?hash=item1a9a79e3ae:g:R18AAOSwFiZewH8C

Don't. That car is a £50K car when new, and will still need £50K car priced maintenance now. In fact the older these get, the more expensive they become to maintain. With a D3/4, you need to keep a £3,000 to £5,000 contingency fund available, for when the gearbox or engine lets go. These big LRs are lovely vehicles, but almost impossible to run on a budget.

With your available money, if must have an LR, when by a Freelander 2, as it's basically a Ford Mondeo underneath the LR body. ;)
