Hi, I'm looking to buy my first Defender (110). Budget around £10K. Does anybody have any tips on what to look for, what to avoid? Any links to other resources welcome. Thanks!

You could try posting in Introduce Yourself! :)

Followed by forum search, top rhs of page, this has been covered about a thousand times before.;)

And there are no resources worthy of the name, other than this one. We lead, others imitate!

First of all, welcome to the asylum.
Second, £10k is a hell of a lot of cash to fork out on soething that will be a constant drain on your wallet.
Are you mechanically minded and have you a comprehensive toolbox, which can be updated regularly?
Did you have a Mecanno set as a lad, and if so, you should be able to maintain your Fender.
When you go looking for your first, take someone with you who knows about Landies, along with a hammer and big screwdriver.
Then take zillions of pics and post them on here so that you will have at least one feedback comment from someone who's been aroud the block a few dozen times.
Oh yes, don't upset the natives as some of them growl a bit about introductions and the like ...
Hope this helps you as much as the morphine is helping me at the moment!

Thanks for the advice Oldseadog. I have prepared myself for the ongoing maintenance costs...or at least I think I have!

Use the .gov MOT history checker to see how it faired over the last few Years, I look to see if the previous owner took care of problems or jsut drove it and let the MOT point out potential problems.

Double check vehicle identity using the .gov vehicle history check.

Also , depending on where you are going to drive it. You might want to check the LEZ compliance.

Cheers

I bought my first defender about a week ago... 6000 EUR for an LHD 1997 110. It looks a right mess both inside and outside at the moment. The mechanicals seemed good and the engine had a lot of work done to it so I took the plunge. I went for a 'cheap' one so that I can customise it how I want. Only thing I took time to check was the chassis...take a torch and screwdriver with you...mine is fine apart from the rear crossmember which will need replacing soonish.

Thanks Turboman, will try that.

Like they say, if you have 10k, try and spend about 6 or 7, leave another 3 to tidy it up.
And dont think newer is better, condition is much more important than year with landrovers.
And some of the later stuff is arms and legs to repair and maintain. And can suffer all kinds of electronic gremlins that the older ones dont get. :)
