Hi guys.
A mate of mine is looking for a Defender 90 to put dogs in and generally be used as a workhorse.
What bothers me is that he's looking at a petrol engined automatic!
I'm trying to persuade him to go diesel due to running costs and possible reliability ..................... but I've got no idea at all!
I have a Wolf, so I know their running costs, but can anyone give me an indication of how expensive it would be to run a V8 Automatic.
I'm thinking fuel consumption, servicing, reliability, insurance etc, etc.
Thanking you all in advance,

Slime58.

I think fuel consumption is about the same as the 2.5 petrol, expect 17mpg without any lead foot driving. Insurance is generally pretty cheap same as with most Defenders, a well maintained petrol, especially a V8 can be very reliable as a power plant, especially with an electronic ignition upgrade and proper timing set up. Expect to be on first name terms with your petrol station attendants though. But that's the premium you pay for that awesome sound and no diesel rattle.

I think a Disco may suit him better to be honest!

He's already got one of those but doesn't want to see it getting abused by his three gun dogs covered in mud!
Good shout though,
thanks .................... and thanks to PsYcHOSyS too.

Defender is perfect for shooting. But unless the miles he will be doing are few, he needs a diesel.

Why did I assume they were gun dogs??!!

I have absolutely no idea ....................... but they are!
Most of his journeys would be pretty local but maybe one or two trips a year to Scotland!
I said that might get a bit expensive & explained that when I went to the Highlands last summer my Wolf returned 40mpg whilst full of luggage.
(I did cheat by leaving the spare wheel at home though)!
