Bullbars legality?

Hi, I plan on returning to the UK permanently next year, been in USA 28/29 years, I want to bring my beloved 2002 Disco II back with me, but she has ARB Bullbars, what is the law in the UK regarding importing a Land Rover that has these Bullbars already installed? Thanks in advance for any info.

I believe its fine.. search threads... but its an odd law..you cant purchase them new or sell them..

I agree, do a search as it's a bit of a grey area

Ok, thanks for the input, can't seem to find a definite answer anywhere, but you seem to think I can still keep them on my Landy in the UK, right?

Thanks for the reply, yes it does appear to be a very grey area, just need to be sure of whats what.

Question is, what do you mean by 'bull bar'?

The law was concerning FPS Front Protection System.

Now ARB do a FPS and they do a winch mounting system which some people refer to as 'bull bars'

A winch mounting system equipped with a winch is fine. Remove the winch and it can be considered as a FPS and then that hits the grey area.

I have a regular ARB Bullbar (See pic) with a winch mounted in it. So are you saying so long as I keep my winch mounted in it, it will not be a problem?

Here is the relevant European legislation. If you can understand it, you are a better man than I am.
My own, very possibly wrong, interpretation is that if your vehicle was fitted with the bars and sold prior to the date of the legislation, it is legal to continue to use the bars.
I have a 1989 Land Rover 90, it has always had full width solid bull bars fitted. It still does, and I have never been pulled over or prosecuted on UK roads for using them.
I have no idea how that would apply to a vehicle imported from the USA.

hello, i have just uncoverd an old bull bar hiding in the back garden, I know that its illegal to fit, but wanted to ask about selling or best course of action to do. is it as disappointing as a trip to the local recycling centre for scrap metal or can I make some money out of it.. pictures bellow.

Illegal for you to fit. You could sell it to someone who has a vehicle before the cut off date.

I don't think you would get away with these though. Now that's a bullbar

I know this is an old post but here was my experience....
When I shipped over my Disco, I had problems at the transportation depot at Atlanta, Georgia. They kept insisting I had a front bullbar and that they were illegal in the UK. I had to go to two 4x4 stores in the local area and have them sign paperwork stating that I didn't have a bulbar but that I has a steel bumper with a winch installed. Bullbars aren't made to mount winches.
After 4 hours of running around and talking back and forth to the transportation centre in Southampton, they finally accepted "Myrtle" and shipped her over here.

It’s all very easy to understand.
Full width bull bars means your a taker.
Center bars means you give and take.
Add headlight guards and your a bottom.
Add a snorkel and your a top.
An integral winch can mean your into being fisted but sometimes just means your a bit loose.
Oversized tyres and a lower bar means your into donkeys and bumperetts means you like dressing up.

That law, going off memory, only covers new vehicles at the factory stage. Aftermarket ones are fine.
