Before I run another earth back to the battery I wanted to double check this is actually an earth point!

I think that's just a tab for holding the plastic thing next to it. Having said that, if there's good continuity between it and the battery, why not? I used a bolt on the other side of the bulkhead as an earth for my auxiliary instruments about three years ago, and they're still glowing away brightly. However, if this is for your lights, maybe it's worth going all the way back to the battery box. With mine I've made an auxiliary earth by putting a ring terminal on the end and using the battery terminal clamp bolt - 8 mm in diameter as I recall.

Excuse my ignorance here guys, but by saying check continuity, would I put a meter on the cable end and other to somewhere on the "body" ??

Yeah basically, that’s exactly it, just one lead to the earth point and one to the body or bare metal nearby

Cheers @flat . I have issues with my spot lights and they earth on the bulkhead and I think that might be where the problem is.

Personally, when I test earths, I have one lead stuck to the negative battery terminal, and the other touching the wire I’m testing. I’m not interested in how well the wire is connected to the piece of metal next to it, I’m interested in how high the resistance is between the connection point and the earth termainl. Make sure you disconnect your batter when testing resistance, power plays havoc with readings.
