Hi guys, please don't shout if this has been covered before, but the more I search the more confused I get!!
I have a 1990 90td (19j) I'm after some brighter head lights. I don't want to go to the expense of changing the headlight. So was wondering if I can just upgrade the bulbs? Does anyone know of any?
Thanks
Chris

Lamps :) you plant bulbs in the garden.

And yes you can, get some osram 90% brighter ones

Or pop into halfords, they have some called super brilliance or something ther prety bright

They make a massive difference

Cheers deasy. Sorry lamps haha, some daffodils on the front might look good!!
Is it a straight swap with those two youve mentioned?

I've used the Halford ones in the past, they only last for about three months in the winter. Tried two sets and gave up - they are brighter though.

Which tested lamps a while ago, found the Bosch (I think) were good. Pop into your library and have a look at the Which report.

Crystal headlights with nightbreaker plus - Ive had these in both of my defenders now after reading a recommendation on here. They are a massive improvement over the sealed beam units

I would also recommend Osram Night Breakers, the packaging indicates that they might have shorter life than "regular" bulbs but I have never had one blow.

I've used H4s in the headlights and H1s in front spots and they were excellent.

Much cheaper than halfords snazzy ones as well.

You will possibly have sealed beam units in a 1990 model, meaning you have no choice in replacing the headlights if you wish to replace a bulb. New light units are only about £20 a pair. Sealed beam's are good if you do alot of deep wading... as they are sealed from all the mud entering the light but are **** poor when it comes to lighting the road.

If you can just swap the bulbs, I can recommend Osram Nightbreakers, much better than the standard bulbs.

i have this argument with my electrician friend all the time and i annoy the **** out of him cos he doesnt have an answer

do you ask for a light bulb? or a light lamp?

if u go into an electrical outlet and ask for a lamp you will get a lamp not a bulb:D

:D I'm an electrician

I don't ask for light bulbs, I ask for BC lamps, ES lamps, SES lamps, gu10 lamps etc :D

Not being technical or anything tho :p

But ther table lamps or floor lamps :D

fit H4 Osram nightbreakers, they turn night into day. If you have sealed beams replace them with 'crystal clear' headlamp units 'E4' marked off ebay, they are not much more expensive and not only work better but give a much more modern look. Worth cleaning up the earth connections as well :D

Thanks for all the advice guys, it's much appreciated.
I'm gonna try the crystal clears with the night breakers!
Cheers

You have to remove the headlight unit to change the bulbs anyway, and there are so many cheap units available, kinda seems a bit pointless not to change them aswell
Another vote for Osram Nighbreakers, they're superb :D

hi m8,

i did this upgrade to my ex utility 110.

i found that brighter lamps alone made little differance!
-obviously they were'nt 100w lasers but road legal (55w) H4 osram 'night breakers' i think

anyway, i found this was because my 10+ year old wagon had the stock lucas ****e and turns out there wasnt much science involved when they knocked these out!

now days, with leaps in halogen lamps and HID, the bowls (as well as the lenses) are engineered by egg heads to focus the beam / spread pattern ect.

point being, if you want truely decent headlights you need to invest in some uprated bowls + lenses which have been designed with H4 halogen in mind

i fitted full bowl units like this;
DEFENDER HEADLAMP UNIT ASSEMBLY RHD GENUINE NEW AEU1355 | eBay

with the addition of some non split convoluted tubing for the exposed loom, 3way superseal connectors + connector covers to make it a lil more waterproof.

now even the wife was impressed with the differance at night
