So, I was taking my daughter and son in law to their restaurant for a meal, when the engine cut out completely. As I free wheeled to a halt in a farm driveway, I could see smoke coming from under the bonnet. We all jumped out, and I lifted it up, only to find acrid smoke coming from under the inlet manifold. My son in law who was standing at the side said, "I can see fire":flame:Then I too saw it so I grabbed a water bottle I had, and pored it over the area, which extinguished it immediately. I got out the tools and took off the Air intake assy, but couldn't see anything burned. A call to Green flag came next, and they sent a local recovery service to take us home.
Next morning, early, I set to work taking off the intake manifold, only to find a fried glow plug cap and roasted wiring. WTF! On closer inspection of the underside of the manifold, I found it had seemingly been burned through from the inside. presumably by hot gasses. My theory at the moment is that maybe the EGR valve may be stuck open, thus letting far to much hot exhaust gas through, which had melted the plastic manifold and then fried the other stuff. Anyone had a similar experience?

WOW! not heard of this one before but may explain some unexplained fires have you got it going again? did you looked at the EGR valve was it open ? and sorry to hear of your wows.

Hi Chaps.
Not got it sorted yet as I can't get to Jake Wrights till tomorrow for hopefully a second hand manifold and a new plug top.
I'm in Skipton.
I've got some pictures if I can get them uploaded somehow.
Cheers.

North Yorkshire a big place and ur a bit to far to pop and give a hand. Hope u get it sorted and hope it don't cost to much to fix as they cost enough in general lol

OK chaps, uploaded photo's to my website as below, for your entertainment. ;)

Thanks for the thought Matt, I'm sure I'll get it sorted.

Not seen it myself but somewhere in the back of my mind, there is a notion that some one once had a similar problem and it turned out to be the glowplug relay that stuck open causing the glowplug wiring to burn out. Could it have been burnt from outside or is it defiantly an internal fire that has started. Just not sure that by the time the exhaust gasses even with a stuck erg valve would have enough heat.
On another note I am in Earby so if you are stuck with any thing then PM me and if you need any help.

Thanks for the offer mate.
Anythings possible with it at the mo, although if the relay had stuck, I would have thought all plugs would be affected, as it is, it's just the one.

Update.
So, got a quote for a new plenum chamber AKA inlet manifild......£340.00!
Then tried to find a replacement glow plug cap, only to be told "it's part of a wiring loom assembly and can't be bought seperately" New loom £210.00 :eek:
After picking miself up off the floor I thought I'd try fleabay. Found and bought a used manifold for £24.50 :), and I think (hope) I can bodge the old cap and wire. Fingers crossed, I'll keep you informed. Freelanders eh? Who'd have em? :violent:
