Got a broken breather pipe between the vacuum advance unit on the distributor and the carb. Anyone know what affect will this have if I continue to drive cos I cant get a new one till monday?

well that ain't no breather pipe..its about mmm!!! maybe 1/4 inch dia probelly black and it adjusts yer timing depanding on engine load and speed. without it you'll have no vaccum advance and you'll be drawing in a slight bit of excess air to yer carbatooter.

try wrapping some insulting tape round it till you get a new one.or try a tools shop as they might have some for compressors(they use it for controling start ups)
if you can't bodge it till then try and block up the end coming from the carb.

Cheers slob.

To tell the truth looks like its been broken for a while - would it affect fuel the economy cos its been drinking a bit more recently?

well yer timing would be out like ah said so that would't help and pulling in more air isn't gonna help either. but as to that be enought to notice or not its would be hard to say. i reckon you'd hear a mis-fire from the pipe being busted before yer fuel ecomomy would suffer too much

Cheers slob!

Patched it using a bit of plastic pipe for now! The pipe is actually metal and about 2mm in dia so im not sure we were talking about the same pipe?

you can usually start up and drive with a broken advance/retard pipe. it dont do much for your mpg though.

we used to remove them on the racing minis. then fix the timing with a great big screw. didnt matter about advance/retard when you were reving at full chat all the time.
didnt matter about the fuel either!

My 24V 109 has a lucas distributor with no vacuum advance. I get about 19 mpg which I think is quite good with engine driven fan and 24V generator.

So, yours shoudl still run but you do need to blank of conenction to carb to stop air leaking in.
