I have a 96 300TDI disco. Whilst driving on road this weekend, I turned a left hand corner at around 3 mph and heard a strange clunk, then crunch from what I thought was the rear. The truck then stopped. When I looked further the nearside rear wheel was locked and dragging on the road. I could roll the truck backwards for around a meter then the wheel locked again. I then put everything in neutral (including transfer box) and the same happened (I was on a hill so it would not roll back).

My initial thought is that the rear diff has fell apart, however something is niggling me that it may be the transfer box and diff lock. I would appreciate some guidance, before I start to take the thing to bits.

In anticipation.. Thanks Jon

Before U limb it totally first of all jack up the problematic side, take off the wheel and look at the caliper, maybe is just a blocked brake.....if u dont see anything from there u can go further.......If u speak about the TB and central difflock forget it.....when one of these goes both wheels from that axle are samely affected..........however i think it could be the rear diff

Thanks for that. I will go and get my hands dirty. If it was a brake issue, would the wheel just lock on and not go back and forth?

Thanks re the TB/

When brake plates are getting very thin the pistons could come out too much and block in that position.......but when this happens it's usually without clunks.......if nothing shows when u dissasemble the hub then it remains the diff

Nothing easyer...drain the oil, disconect the propshaft, release and remove the wheel hubs and drive shafts, unscrew the 10 fixing bolts from diff, remove diff..........before u refit a new or the refurbished one clean the axle inside with a cloth soaked in gas.....just if u see that is dirt in there.....usually it is.

Thanks again. Is there anything special when putting the new diff in? Some people say it is hard to line them up?

Some one has said to me that the wheel bearing might have ca lapsed? What do you think?

Ok, a bolt had sheared in the hub assembly. Caused a right mess. Replaced the Stub axle, the hub assembly, the bearing and oil seal... Joy. Thanks for your help.
