Just a quick note to inform all Defender owners of a Britpart issue.

I have been renovating my wife's 110 TDi300, particularly the cooling system.

I replaced all the major components but the bottom hose is the subject of this notice;

Unlike the original all-rubber one, the replacement is made of several hoses with plastic joiners and jubilee clips. I was hesitant when I fitted this about 6 months ago, but last night my wife came home with high temp gauge and oil pressure warnings !!!

I quick check revealed that one of the hoses had parted company with it's joiner and allowed the water pump to pump out all the coolant.

I've re-installed the original rubber hose after checking it and left the engine to cool down overnight. This afternoon I'll be re-filling the coolant and checking everything.

I have never had a problem with Britpart pieces before, but this time the consequences could be nasty - let's hope not !!!!!

I've included a photo now.

Bought from Paddocks but on their site they are now showing a different one. My guess is they had trouble with the one I bought.

Truly speaking I should never have fitted the one I bought as it was suspect right from the beginning - however we live and learn don't we?

its all part of thye drive for ever cheaper parts to beat the competion ,problem is its gone past the point of actually been a useful part ,as ive said before at one time bp sourced a suitable pattern part and priced accordingly .now there is tooo much pressure from the retail side setting price and then sourcing parts to suit

Just to hopefully conclude this - she took 9ltrs of coolant:eek::eek:.

But is now ticking over perfectly sweet with no warning lights and maintaining coolant level.

So hopefully we got away with it :D:D:D:D

so did you ever check the clamps were tight and do a recheck? if a clamp worked loose not hardly brit parts fault, more a maintenance issue, as in lack of. could also of been a problem of pressure build up in the cooling system

That's a good idea, I never thought of that.;)

The original fitment hose on my 300TDi (i.e. Genuine Part) was not the all bonded type but was also made up using plastic joiners but instead of hose-clips it was fitted together using the crimped clips which couldn't be removed.
When I suffered a problem (not with a joint I have to add) I fitted a Britpart replacement which as you say uses hose-clips but before I fitted it I made sure all clips were tight (a couple did indeed take some additional tightening) but since then it has been fine (fitted for a couple of years now). As a matter of course I check the tightness of any hose-clip from time to time (not just the coolant hose) and none have needed any further tightening since.

You say the hose parted company with the joiner. Do you mean the clip came loose and the hose slid off as if so that is just a case of re-fitting the hose?

well if people will put ****part on there motor.

There IS a reason alot of people wont put there parts on there motors. ;)

Now you know why.

In fairness to Britpart I've used a lot of their stuff without any trouble at all.

Also it is worth noting that Paddocks (the supplier) no longer sell this version of this part, the current version is in moulded rubber.

They used to sell the moulded rubber before too, last year. When I was having airlock issues I got new hoses from a local indy hoping for decent aftermarket or even oem parts (I'd have paid for the quality) but groaned when I spotted the packaging, tbf theyve lasted 8 months so far but the joins are very obvious between the hoses in mine and are a constant worry + I have a constant drip from the top hose where it meets my bearmach rad & no amount of tightening/replacing the jubilee clip helps...

"I have a constant drip from the top hose where it meets my bearmach rad & no amount of tightening/replacing the jubilee clip helps..."

I had exactly the same from brand-new (i.e. Genuine LR parts) but this was from the bottom rad pipe, not the top. Won't bore with the long & tedious details but needless to say that the pipes & rad were replaced yet still a drip persisted however I finally found a solution which was to double up on the clips at the radiator connection (side by side one facing each direction). That cured it perfectly and it hasn't been a problem since.

Heard that that hose set up is ROW spec, so that out in the remote parts of the world if one part of the hose goes you stand a good chance of getting something similar which can be clamped on rather than trying to find the complex single piece hose.

Makes sense, but you wouldn't want to find the new section comes in a blue box!!
