Morning all!
Got a Ser3 SWB here with an odd brake issue. drive up the road, stand on the brakes & the rear locks up.. Can be entertaining on times! All brakes are adjusted ok so whats going on? Wondering if someone has put some LWB brake cylinders on?. Any idea what the bore of the rear cylinders should be so i can check them out.

When you say, stand on the brakes, if you mean brake hard, it's normal for the rears to lock up. The size of the slave cylinders wont make any difference to the braking effect, it's more to do with the size of the shoe/drums and the amount of force applied to the hydraulic system, e.g. heavy foot and or servo

Try taking the drums off, and chamfering the leading edges of the brake shoes a bit with a file.
Also check that the springs between the brake shoes are correctly installed.
 
Rear swb cylinders 1" diameter.Fronts 11/4" diameter.
Try backing the adjuster back an extra click or two it allows the front to operate 1st.
 
Surely that will just give more pedal travel Blackburn? The fronts won't operate properly until the rear drums are up against the shoes.
 
I had this issue with my SWB on 10" drums. As has been mentioned the fronts have larger slaves to increase breaking force but I found the rears locked prematurely. As Woody has said adjusting them wont make a difference.

In the end I needed to go to 11" on the front with the 1 1/4" slaves to get the balance right. I think the brakes are designed with a loaded vehicle in mind.
 
If they work well then fronts should lock too on dirt tracks , sounds like fronts need attention , does it still pull up straight without pulling . As Rob says try chamfering shoes although one of mine used to grab and lock with a light foot which chamfering sorted it.
I have the 11inch drums at front and when these work the front end dips down under braking , is there air in fronts if not working better
 
Also check your rear tyres, if they are pumped up too hard or they are really old and the rubber is hard they will lose traction easier
 
Theory may say it cannot make a difference it would take less than an hour to try it and cost nothing.
I keep mine like that and another longtime owner on LR UK swears by it.
 
Right then!
Pulled the rear drums off & there was an extra spring on one side which was pulling the shoes back into the piston. This was probably why they needed a quick pump before they did anything. So at least the rears are now how they should be. Also changed the flex hose as it was probably as old as the car. On to the fronts. Change both fglex hoses & pulled the drums off. OSF hub seal leaking which probably not helping so changed both sides. Put new shoes on & champhered the leading edges. Bled the brakes right through & now have a decent pedal but the rear still seems to lock up. The tyres are rather suspect Deestone 600-16's & as old as the hills. This probably isnt helping.
Thanks for all the suggestions, Lets see what happens next.
