I've just ordered a pair of these from bits4landys:

https://www.bits4landys.co.uk/s23_brakepipe_shields_nrc7314.htm

Out of interest, what are the larger holes for? I've never seen them used for anything. (Reference pic attached (not mine).

I get they're located in place by the spring dowel under the axle and are a good anchor for the brake pipes.. but I don't see how they are "shields", there's no motion I can see or think of there. Or am I missing something? Cheers.

The front has something similar on to prevent axle rubbing against springs , the big hole will be for the stud which goes through all the springs , i think it’s clamped in place just by the u bolts and bottom plate

Yeah I know what that one's for but the other two large ones the p-clips do not use always appear unused. I can't work it out myself, don't think they're important but wondered what they're for. :)

If you’re cleaning the axle up i can recommend electrolysis to remove the rust takes a lot of the pain out of it, and you can be doing another job while it’s getting derusted

Cheers for the links @rob1miles. I've ordered some of the sleeved p-clips. How do the other clips secure to the chassis? They look like pegs..?

@steve2286w As for electrolysis, maybe one day! :) I'm working in a tight fit single garage, so it's about all I can do to put everything on axle stands and work on it in place with a prep disc and wire wheel. It'll be a lot better than it was, and maybe one day I'll have enough space to do as you suggest.

The overpriced black things fit in holes on the top of the chassis rails. You hammer them in, expect a few breakages. The bottom bit slides up and locks.

How important are the brake shields mentioned in the first post? I have just repalced my springs all round I did not have them fitted to remove so did not refit any when putting it back together. If they serve a very very important purpose which justifies dismantling the suspension again I will consider getting a set of the stainless ones. If not I will continue without them as it has been for all of m 8 years of ownership.

@dag019 I'm not aware of a reason that would justify you dismantling things to fit these. (Someone else might.. :))

I don't see myself how they are "shielding" the pipes from anything, it's fairly safe to route the pipes along the axle there without passing that specific point and being clipped into a bracket like this. A lot of people use tie clips for added assurance. The spare holes confuse me, as does the "flap" on the side with a turned up edge? I'm only putting them on because I'm fitting new springs at the back now and replacing all the brake pipes. I'm doing a '69 2A and I'm trying to fit parts that "should" be there as I find they're missing.

If you have fitted the brake pipes to the back of the axle in a tidy way then it's fine. Plastic tie's fitted with a clip you can fit the brake pipe into are available
The important thing is to fix the pipe's where they are least likely to be damaged by debris on and off road and cannot vibrate.

I suppose they do encourage you to route the pipes correctly along the back face of the axle where they won't get crushed. Brake pipe "guides" might be a better name in that case. But the holes and flap remain unexplained. :D

Good point that Blackburn. I wouldn't have thought of that as my check straps are missing and I need to fit new ones.

I found a reference picture that shows the setup (not my own, although this is what I'm aiming for):

Looking at this I'm more encouraged about their usefulness.
