Does anyone know what the steel ring which is inserted around the caliper piston is for? I replaced the pads on the front of my Defender and I noticed that around one of the pistons there is what looks like an iron O ring and it has come loose. I am sure it's not critical but all the others seem to be corroded in place and they don't seem to do anything. Any ideas will be gratefully received.

It's to retain the dust/dirt seal. There are 2 seals per piston, 1 is a fluid seal, the other is a dust/dirt seal.

It sounds like your calipers need a rebuild. Once the dirt gets behind the first seal (dust/dirt seal) it corrodes the piston and eventually the piston siezes in place.
