I've got a treat for you all.

For all your help and perseverance in putting up with me :)

I decided to take the boot button apart as no way I'm paying stupid money to a spring guy or anyone for a plastic button o_O

At first I thought it was glued up as the tangs snapped and it wouldn't budge. I put two holes in with a punch so I could get a circlip pliers on it, filled it with gt85 and left to soak overnight

So for the moment ; take a seat, few deep breaths, perhaps a quick cuppa then when you are ready read on....:D

Are you ready?...

Look what I found ...:p

We were all shocked! :eek::D
How on earth was this still operating??? And how do I make it work again with a 50p budget for a £90 part

Some may recall I thought about taking the spring out of my old stat to see if it would fit. Obviously,
this is a stupid idea that won't work
But the principle does

We all have one of these lying around ...

The shi**ty sealant gun, not the 3rd brake light ;) The spring off the middle fits into the button cap, then the switch mechanism in on top. I cut the last spring coil off so it's not flat and the coil doesn't touch the two connections (just the white bit). I put insulation tape around the ends of the spring to soften and stabilise it.

I bought a new o-ring so total cost of job was 20p - still more expensive than necessary.

It works well :)

Hope this makes sense to any with this common problem. No more unfair pricing for us!

Nice one.
Would you say the spring fits...
A- well enough.

B- brilliantly.

C- dinosaur with no eyes?

Let's see @Bagshot beat that dinosaur ;)
Proper rust from the cretaceous period :D

dinosaur with no eyes?

Dnosaur? :p

Doyouthinkhesaurus - and his dog

It works very well. Has bit of resistance but comfortable. Makes life lot easier functioning as it should

I dont have the audacity to get a box of sh*te sealant guns, box of o-rings then sell a kit for £10+ That's not why I'm here.
Everyone's got one of those guns lying around uselessly - or knows someone that does, or a £1shop that sells them. (Dinosaurs sold serpently) :D

You don't
have to do it like me - there's always a new one from JLR or that spring guy from youtube/ebay. Or old one off scrapper with dust like above. Also check out Datatek's link below

Check out their prices, you decide which one works . Any problems I will report back :)

Still twice as cheap as the spring guy everybody seems to consider, plus you get the new switch and no microswitch to malfunction in future.

I've never had problems with weather effecting the boot button. It must be better than it was full of grit. Time and abuse is the test :)

JLR? Somerset?
Thanks for he excellent solution - but I don't have any dinosaurs!

If you want to be nerdy and 'upgrade' your landy, there are relays you can get fairly cheap that work off a remote fob. Just leave the button to fill the hole and look original
