Body Control Module.

While back I had a whole collection of electrical problems which I diagnosed as a faulty Body control Module. Got a replacement off ebay. Got it programmed in by local specialist. Fine for a while but then all the problems started to come back. Finally traced the real fault as water in the back of the fuse box. Sorted that.
Question is, if I want to re-fit the original BCM, can I do it without programming it in since it was originally programmed to my Disco?
I could just plug it in and see what happens, but I don't want to screw anything up.

Why would you want to re-fit the old one?

Because there was nothing wrong with it and the new one is showing an extra 80000 miles. Don't know if that can be re-programmed but if its possible it would be easier to just re-fit the old unit.

You won't be able to wipe that 80,000 miles off, even if you refit the old BCU.

The Instrument Pack and BCU both contain the mileage and when sync'ed up, will sync. to the higher figure.

But he may not have synced the replacement with the instrument panel.

You may need to buy a new instrument panel (quite a few on Ebay), but make sure it has less miles on it than your old BCU, then get the instrument panel synced to the BCU.

Trouble is the mileage you have done since putting the replacement BCU in and now will not be logged on the old BCU, so you will be reflecting a lower mileage than the car has actually done, and that would be dishonest, and you may need to sit on the naughty step for a while to atone for this heinous act.

I thought it wouldn't be that easy. I might try and re-fit the old one and see what happens.

If you synched your instrument panel to the replacement BCU you will only succeed in adding 80k miles to your original BCU if you try to synch it again, as it goes to the highest mileage.

Is the mileage in the instrument panel flashing at the moment? If it is then your instruments and BCU are not synched. (Even if it isn't, it could mean that error correction has been disabled, but the units will store their own mileage. Really you need someone with a Nanocom to read what mileage each unit is showing.

Yes, they are flashing but they weren't when the replacement BCU was fitted. Only started flashing once all the electrical problems started up again, before I replaced the fuse box.

Flashing denotes that the BCU and odometer are not synched. If you put your old BCU back in then it will continue to flash, assuming that you have done some miles since you swapped them over. If you then synchronise them, by my reckoning it should bring the BCU mileage to what is displayed in the instrument panel, which would be the correct mileage, assuming that the mileage being displayed now (albeit flashing) is what the car has done (made up of mileage when you took the BCU out + mileage done with the replacement BCU in it)

I have been told i need to fit a new BCM YWC000310 to my Disco 2 and Im looking for advice. Does anybody know where I can get a NEW one? I have found lots of 2nd hand ones but Ive been told that I should only fit a new one. What are you thoughts?

Secondly; how can I be certain this is the problem? Basically I was driving with no problems, stopped then when I came back to the car (without it being locked) the car wouldn't start, it was like the immobiliser had been triggered. Does this sound like the BCM?

1. does it crank?...
2. confirm the red LED is flashing or permanently on when you turn the key

3. if the conclusion will be that you need to replace the BCU a known good/working one will do the job, you dont need new one just somebody who knows what he's doing with a tester
