Blue Smoke after engine switched off

My diesel Freelander (2002) had smoke billowing downwards out of a pipe underneath the front nearside corner of the vehicle after a short journey. It stopped after about 20 seconds, but there was a fair amount of smoke.

What caused it? What is the pipe for? Is it a big job to sort out?

Any help much appreciated...

Okay, I now know what the pipe is for, and have discovered that members write in acronyms.....

IIAPTTIBSCOOTP.

(Is it a problem that there is blue smoke coming out of the pipe?)
