Chaps i have always used a smidge of the stuff when doing a head gasket replacement, not done one in a while and when i picked up the new gasket the guy behind the counter looked a little strange that i wanted to use the blue stuff on the head, so my question is to use or not?

Dont do it!
Hylomar is great for other stuff, but the best long last sealing properties for a head and its gasket is to make sure nothing is warped, scored and the mating surfaces are perfectly clean! The gasket is there to mate the head to the block and provide the seal!

Yup, I agree. Hylomar is great stuff is used properly (which many people don't do and then slag it off) but never anything other than cleanliness on a head gasket.

great stuff hylomar, thats why rolls royce use it ( made by them too) and the army use it etc, its great in small doses, i used it on my last few series rebuilds, but DEFO NOT ON A HEAD GASKET, if in doubt just have a skim, use a composit gaskit fer added garauntee of a good seal :)

90Truckcab is spot on, regarding hylomar, I use the stuff on rolls-royce conway jet engines for sealing gearboxes and other stuff! Its resistant to all fuels, oils and coolant. The common mistake is people dont apply it to both mating faces, then dont let the solvent 'flash' off for 15 mins before assembly. Can lead to some red faces on a ground test!
