I replaced the steering box on my disco 2 today, all went well untill bleeding it

First off i was surprised to find an adwest box on the car, as its only done 135k, so i assume its already a replacement

Anyway, i picked up a brand new old stock unit from a dealer, fitted it, and bled it until nothing but clear oil is coming out, problem is that the steering is really heavy, and wasnt before.

I bled it as per Haynes, and the threads posted on here, but no luck

Any ideas?

Cheers

it is a self bleed system really! but sounds as though you have used the bleed on the top of the box, i did 1 on my old 1, never was as good as the orginal! how is the pump itself?

Yes, bled it through the nipple on top.

Pump seems fine, no bother prior to change, and is putting fluid through at quite a rate,

Box was changed due to very bad wear

I took it for a drive last night, about 12 miles, up to speed its fine, even tried figure of 8's in a car park

low down its still really heavy, odd for a genuine part i would have thought, but if has been sitting on a shelf for years, it may faulty?

cheers

bleeding isnt necessary it has return pipe unlike brakes ,if pumps and belt are ok ,return box as input shaft is worn or box set too tight
