Black smoke on acceleration

2004 td6, the car drives and runs great but over the past few weeks have notice black smoke on hardish acceleration !. I've had the crankcase breather and air filter changed as read that's the first thing to check. Anyway no difference so I suspect the egr. Does this sound logical ? I disconnected the pipe to view inside I situ and it looks completely clogged with black sludgey crap.am I correct to assume stuck open will make the black smoke or is it stuck shut ?? Excuse my ignorance. Not sure if it's worth mentioning but the car rarely does any long runs, it's basically a school run/shopping car. Thanks

Stuck open will cause smoke and loss of power.

Lots of short runs coke the exhaust up, needs a good blast to clear the crap.
