I have had my 1984 110 Landrover for approx 8 years and always seemed to have problems with binding brakes! Just recently it has been bad but not on individual wheels but the whole system and seems to be linked to the pedal or servo unit, the strange thing is that I have tested on a run without even touching the brakes and knowing that they was fine before setting out, after about 15 minutes they start to bind (badly) and the pedal becomes tight and to the top of it's travel, it almost seems that the servo has malfuntioned some way, as after stopping and turning off the engine for a while the brakes return to their normal self. Is it possible for the servo to maybe do this on it's own if the valve is faulty letting air travel both ways. I did notice when trying to replicate this problem with the pedal whilst being standstill there was an abnormal air sound from the pedal whilst operating in it's malfunctioning mode. When driving when the pedal is tight and the brakes binding trying to stop is harder than should be!!! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have got a 90 2.5 N/A ex-ministry. I bought it last October after it had been standing for around 6 months.

I suffered what sounds very similar. The pedal goes rock hard and the brakes bind. I got it back home and in the morning, there was nothing wrong, but after driving it again for a short distance, the brakes bound on again.

With mine, it is/was the split system master cylinder. The piston was sticking in the chamber and after a period of time it releases itself. A quick fix is to release the pressure in the system. On the side of the master cylinder (it is connected to and sticks out of the back of the servo unit towards you) are the two pipes for the split brake system. With a half inch open ended spanner, in turn undo and do up about half a turn, fluid will seep out, the brake pipes that connect to the master cylinder. This releases the pressure and the brakes will unbind. You will find it will only be one of them that you need to undo. It proably needs a new master cylinder as the chamber is probaly corroded.

hi frosticles, sounds like it could be something like that, I had just serviced the master cylinder changing the seals as I had hardly any brakes, the trouble in the end was a pin had come out of a rear brake shoe leaving lack of adjustment, I did end up power bleeding the brakes with one of these things that connect to a tyre as they would not bleed, I just cant understand how the brakes can come on and bind when I have made sure that I had not applied them beforehand!
