The primer underneath is more important, you want several coats of Corroless, or a similar, quality, rust resistant primer.
Chassis Black, or any good quality exterior metal paint on top to give a water resisting finish should be fine.

You are right, search function is not working, and has not been for a while.

I'm going back to bare metal, electrox high zinc primer then going epoxy mastik on top. I've been researching this a bit and epoxy mastik definitely seems the way to go. As above, as decent primer is very important

Actually arrived this morning!

You will need the epoxy to stick on the high zinc primer, it doesn't take paint all that easily.
And make sure you get a good one, the cheap ones don't actually contain all that much zinc.
I have used it quite a lot on machine painting. I used to use Teamac. The sure sign of a good one is weight, even a 1 litre tin should be heavy.

It's insane how much the pail weighs. I started of red oxide as I had it in cupboard but knew that I should really be using good gear if I didn't want to do it twice. Yeah that' the plan, zinc primer then epoxy then maybe stonechip?

Nothing wrong with quality red oxide either, the cheapies are not much good, the better ones use another metal pigment to replace the original lead. Corroless is about the best of them now, in my opinion. I buy it in bulk, to keep the costs reasonable, but it is also available off the internet now.

wow thanks everyone that ELECTROX looks pretty serious, love the danger labels

That, Galvafroid, or Teamac are all good if you want to go the high zinc route, it is like a cold galv process.
If you want to go Corroless, the Buzzweld site I posted the link to above sell that.

Yeah dynax is their version. I sound like I I linked to them haha. It' Just where I found their products through rusty datsun resto so went with what I knew

Make sure yer come back and tell us how yer got on with the painting. And some pic's of the job done.
