battery warning light

hi guys, im sure someone out there will have had this.. i was travelling home the other night in my 2002 td5 and the battery light started flickering, i realized it was coming on when i lifted my foot off the throttle about 60/70 mph but went off when i accelerated. so the next day i started the car warmed it up , no light on but when i revved it upto 3000rpm it came on then went out under 2000rpm. any ideas guys?? battery? alternator? voltage reg/rec? cheers,, frizzy

On normal cars I've had..the battery light on usually meant alternator

Might be as simple as worn or loose belt, but probably regulator pack on alternator needs replacing

Hi, that warning light looks like a battery but it has nothing to do with the battery itself as it's directly connected to the alternator on a separate output, hence it's official name: "Alternator charge warning lamp" , can be the alternator or the circuit between it and the instrument pack cos a bad contact on that path would make the warning flicker, check the small plug on the alternator to not be loosen. It's a quite idiotic engineering if you read the description of it cos if it goes out at 7.6V it's useless to show if the alternator is really charging the battery or not

Could be a worn/sticking carbon brush on the alternator.
Test the alternator by having the engine running and all electrics switched on i.e.lights, HRW, etc then use a voltage tester across the battery terminals. You should be getting 14 volts odd. If not, taker it off and give it to an alternator/starte rebuilding company to test and rebuild it.
Much cheaper than buying a new one, if it is in need of attention. And if they test it and there is nothing wrong with it you can look elsewhere.

thanks for the replies guys, well due to the weather eventually got a chance to look at my disco, i was told that oil can escape out the front r/h corner of the rocker cover down the wires and it ingresses in the harness just below. so i sprayed it with brake cleaner and the top of the alternator and blew out with complressed air and the light has gone out. so im thinking it was maybe shorting out. ill keep youse posted. cheers frizzy
