Just browsing the series 3s on eBay and I've spotted a few that fitted the bill but one had an overdrive and when I contacted the seller he said he wouldn't take less than £1200 as it had a Fairey overdrive on it. I would have gone as far as £300 top line, it was rough! I asked how much without the OD on it and he said without he still wanted £600.

Is a Fairey OD worth £600?

Seems eBay sellers think they are and if folk are dumb enough to buy them then I guess they must be.

O/D's are a useful addition as they reduce both revs. & mechanical noise, plus they also give you the ability to multiply the intermediate ratios. Make sure the engine has the power to pull the higher gearing though as a worn motor will struggle on the open road. Whether mechanical O/D's are worth £600 is a matter of opinion, but if you do a high open road mileage or a lot of towing then I'd say probably.

At £600 I could get busy creating adaptor plates and getting an LT77 or even an R380 in there, combine that with an LT230 converted to P/T4X4 and we're on to a winner.

£100~£200 for boxes and depending on your ability you could do a lot of your work yourself.

Hardly worth the effort.
Besides. We don’t want your sort in the series section too often. :p:p:p
