Hi folks,

I fancy an auxiliary power socket for the boot of my new freelander - it's only around £30 but my dealer wants £130 to fit it!

Anyone done this themselves? It is simple?

Cheers

Simon

I take it its a cigarette lighter type socket, if so £130 is a joke to fit, get a volt meter and find the desired wires yourself, if its a dealer kit have you checked that the wiring doesnt have a connector pre-fitted to allow you just to plug the unit straight into the loom.

Zippy

I have to agree with Zippy, there is a lot of connections at the back of the freelander, more than likely it will just plug straight in....?

hello simon, if its the auxilary power socket that goes in the back it is a bit of a pickle to fit and does take about 2 hours,as the leads run all the way to the battery and the socket fits in the back and you have to cut this out nicely in the rear quarter trim panel it also has an a ignition sense wire running upto the fuse box on the drivers side so good luck with fitting, tiga

Thanks for the info folks!

Think I'll leave it for now. Bit disappointed that the new style Freelander has had the centre console power socket removed (the one for people in the back seat to use).

Never mind.

Simon

Wow that does look difficult actually, I have to admit I was thinking of doing this little modification to mine, been put off now:( .

If one has an older Hippo, with the power socket for the rearpassengers installed, wouldn't it be possible just to install a cigarette lighter type of power supply somewhere in the trunk and wire it in serial with the one already installed ?? Tnx.

I recently installed a power socket for my ham radio feeding from this socket with no problems. The centre trim up to the handbrake comes up with just two screws (under the rear ashtray) and I scotch-blocked the cables from the ones running into the socket. It was quite easy for me to run the cable forward past the gearstick console and up behind the dashboard, then through the hole under the bits'n'pieces tray on top of the dash. I would see that it could be harder to run it backwards to the boot as there are no plastics to tuck it under, you would have to route under the carpet? The socket is rated at 20A if I remember correctly so it has pleanty of juice and is ignition-controlled!

Hi James,

Thanks for the info and think it will need a small cut in the carpet to put it in to start and than under the carpet into the boot. Must be feasible to do. Thanks again and take care.
