Hello,
I have a 300 tdi discovery 1 auto from 1995.
It's had a recent engine replacement but the job went pear-shaped and the garage is saying it's my fault for supplying the wrong engine (from a 1995 manual) which required 'significant adaptation and conversion' .
They also blamed the lack of power after the 'conversion' on higher cam lift that is present in automatic engines.

Can anyone shed light on this please ?
 
Engine is the same in both auto and manual . First I've heard of a special auto cam! Can't same to find it in the parts book.
What is "significant adaptation"? Auto box is same length as manual and bell housing is the same. I guess the flywheel/ torque converter would be different but couldn't they just take it off the old engine?

You need more info (you sure it was a 300 tdi you gave them?)
 
Check all your details carefully, check the Rave manual it should identify any differences, then if in any doubt still contact an independent LR specialist who will verify their info.
 
Only one camshaft for the 300 Tdi that i can see on parts lists. ERR3547. If there is another one for the auto Land rover don't know about it. ;)

I am positive it's a 300tdi as I checked back with the seller who said same as you more or less.
Garage won't be specific but used the words endeavor, conversion and adaptation. Its been a mess, the first time they didn't attach the kickdown bracket, and claimed I'd never have kickdown after the conversion.
The second time I got it they'd changed the pump & injectors etc, and got it not starting without easy start, making clouds everywhere it went (at 40mph) and leaking oil, and not just a bit.

I'm nearly a grand out of pocket and now need to prove automatic high cam engines don't exist!

I knew they were having me on because I took it for second opinion and it needing setting up was all. Priming, bleeding & timing etc, which is what I told the original garage.

Where might I get the definitive word on 300tdi engines being neither automatic or manual, or having one cam type as standard?

Not the 'specialist' who sold it to me with a broken engine that he'd tried to glue the lid back on?
 
First off think we need to know wot they did to make the manual fit were the auto came out off ?
Did they change the fuel pump? coss IF i'm right both pumps are different (other oppins are welcome) I can only assume they put your no4 injector in ? If they did your pump DID they get it timed up right? Not into auto's mi self but been around them enough to know theirs a different bits!

you have probably bought an edc which was used with autos to give some extra hp,cams are the same there is only 1 300 tdi cam unless you buy an after market performance part ,injection pump and 4th injector differ though ,you can swap parts from a std 300tdi to replace the edc set up
 
One of the pumps would have the gubbins for the kick down cable and you'd have to change the fly wheel / flex plate housing. I've just fitted what was a manual tranny engine into a auto tranny engine and it was straight forward. It cost me the price of the engine and then I had a spare injection pump to sell. The joys of doing your own labour
 
I'm half surprised if a 95 300 auto didn't have EDC - but its so easy to check from the online parts manual, using your VIN number, that my surprise is irrelevant. Said manual at www.allbrit.de

A feb 95 auto we had was EDC, and it was not the first....

I suggest the best way for us to comment is to put some pictures up.

The kickdown bracket is essential, and ZF technical might be happy to confirm that as required.

It does sound like you have been had. :(

Anyway they are both the same, only electronic looking thing on it is the black 'puck' with Bosch stamped on (throttle position sensor?)
 
The one fitted in my auto discovery has got the plastic jobber broken and it still runs fine. Sounds like your expert garage are trying to rip you off or they haven't really got a clue

I just upload piccies from my desktop to the forum. I don't bother with photobucket.

The "black puck" probably means its the DDS pump ( Digital Diesel Solenoid ) - this is a normal VE pump with some extra "security" fitted. If it was EDC, the TPS is on the accelerator pedal assembly, not the pump.

EDC pump is a bit of a giveaway, with the mass of wires hanging out it. best in the bin IMHO.
Take a pic of #4 injector too - EDC will have a sensor built in - no sensor = no EDC.:)
 
The 'puck' thing could also be the throttle position sensor used on later models with EGR valve (engine numbers starting with 23 rather than 16). Has three wires going to a white connector about 6 inches from the pump (from memory) . If it is that then it makes no difference if it is connected or not,.it is the same mechanical pump inside.
