Hi folks.

My 92 Rangie flew through the MOT yesterday, so that's the good news.

Anyhoo, I have lurch on take up in drive or reverse. I've been reading up on the threads concerning this and just wish no know if I've missed anything.

-check wee hatch on transfer box looking for worn pin thingy
-check prop shafts for play...maybe also prop slines or something?
-maybe shaft splines

There is one other thing I'd like explained that may help: When i jack up the front end there is a hell of a lot of turn on the road wheel before the diff engages with the shafts. You can rotate the wheel back and forth and get a clunk...clunk. The splines on the halfshafts are in good condition.

Advice?

ta much :)

Planet wheels and pins worn.

Good job Wammers. It's the front diff.

Do I need any weird tools? What about the adjuster nut on the bearing?

A socket would be handy for those other than that pretty straight forwards. You need to set .005" end float on hub.

Okay dokey!

Does it just tend to be the small gears that wear or does the pinion and crown-wheel go as well?

Everything can wear. Crown wheel is dipped for lubrication planet gears and everything else are splash lubricated. There maybe some wear evident in the pinion and ring gear but my bet is yours will be mostly planet gears. They can get rather sloppy over time.
