Hi. Freelander 2.5 V6 Auto..Yesterday my gearbox started to thump whilst changing from 1st to 2nd and from 3rd back to 2nd so tried it in sport and steptronic to see if it made any difference which it didnt. Got the car home and decided to try it again last night as i had to go out. I got the same thump as before but now it's on all the changes accompanied by a lurching motion at the same time. Any help would be appreciated . Thanks .

Check the 2 barrel connections which carry the electrical signals int come apart. They're located above the auto gearbox if you look down between the battery and head light. Check for damaged harness wires too. Also have a look underneath for an oil leak from the auto.

Forgot to say stop driving it until you know what the problem is or the repair bill may go up more.

Well after a long long wait the gearbox still isnt fixed .. Most garages wont touch it and just say it needs a recon box. It is now in a local transmission shop and the latest news is still not great. New valve body and oil cooler which is being quoted at £1200 inc vat.
So is it a job i can do myself with help from a mechanic and where is the best place to get the parts ? Any advice would be appreciated .

Why change the cooler? They leak or they don't and tbh mostly they don't. The valve block is a pretty easy job to sort and should cost nothing like £1200!! Someone is having you on ;) The valve solonoids are available at reasonable cost.
Or Ashcroft can fit a complete recon box for £1500 odd!!

But tbh the valve block is'nt hard to sort and doesn't require the box to be removed!!

We've had peeps on ere get them repaired for £700-£900 when something cracks inside. It's late so I can't remember what it is. The Ashcroft price of £1500 needs vat added I think.

Did they do a resistance check on the solenoids to see if there was a problem? What diagnostics did they do? When mine went wrong few garages would touch it. There’s loads of crap about it just being an auto and easy to change etc on the web but when it comes to changing it or getting it fixed there’s only certain garages who will try. It’s a lesser risk to the garage if they put a recon in rather than take it apart and choose what to change. They ,ay not get it right.

If it is going to be £1200 to repair then I'd be wondering if a recon replacement would be a betterer option. More money but I would hope it would be in betterer condition and last longer. If it were mine I’d compare this to the cost of getting another Freelander 1 but this time a diesel. V6 repair cost + fuel saving after a few years may out weight the purchase price of a diesel.
