The button on the gear knob on my auto Freelander has never worked, but now there’s so little left to fix I though I might get round to sorting it out. Some questions:
1) How do I get the knob off?
2) Where could I source parts?
3) What’s it meant to prevent?
4) Should I even bother?

Interesting fault. If the buttons not working then you wouldn't be able to get it out of park. Also sitting in neutral beyond the "click" time of not many seconds... you wouldn't be able to get it into Drive. Is the button stuck pushed in? If you put yer hand on the side of the plastic transmission tunnel do you feel the click of the button when pressing/releasing it?

The button is loose, wobbles about, and does nothing, it ‘feels’ as if something is broken. I tried pulling the knob off, but after a couple of minutes astride the damn thing, heaving away with veins about to burst, it wouldn’t budge.

This does look like a strange fault. I've downloaded your excellent Freelander 2 Repair Manual and searched it for any reference to the Selector Lever Button. Found it on page 1370 et seq. Plenty info on how to remove the gear knob and re-install it. You have to go to page 2743 to find out what it does. It does not feature on any of the potential faults on pages 1373/4.
All the other gearbox interlocks work as described in the manual, so I don't think the knob switch has any electrical interface to the shift lock solenoid. Look to me it's purely a mechanical stop to prevent the lever from going from D to P or N to D.
