Help!
My 2003 TD4 Automatic has just developed a problem. I was parked on a slight downhill slope and when I engaged reverse gear when it started moving it juddered.
I have a longish run coming up in a couple of weeks so need to know if there"s something seriously wrong with it.
I read in the Haynes manual that it could be something to do with the electrics/switches?
Please any help appreciated.

The reverse brake band seems to fail after about 100k miles. We'll mine did. Some judder then no reverse at all.

Hope you are not so unlucky.

Hi, What is the Reverse Brake Band and is it expensive to replace
It a band of steel, with a clutch lining material attached. It's moved into place on the outside of the gear set, so to reverse the direction of rotation when reverse is needed. Unfortunately it's a known wearing item, which wears out at about 100 - 150,000 miles. The part itself isn't that expensive, but the gearbox needs to be stripped to replace it, which is a time consuming and so expensive job.

Hi again Nodge68
I know you cant give a definitive answer but this only took place today, how much longer could I continue to drive it.
cheers

Piece of string in my opinion!! Could be any amount of use. Obvs if reverse not used maybe that will prolong!?

Thanks for your replies, can I just ask one thing, could it be a lack of Transmission fluid because I last had it checked over 3 years and 11000 miles of mostly short 10 to 30 mile journeys with lots of stop starts.
cheers

Unlikely, as you'd have similar issues with all gears, not just reverse.

Hi again,
I have just been on the phone to Gearbox Specialists in Southampton and they have told me it could be a Cracked Piston, all to do with the Clutch Pack??
They want £2500 to do the job which I just can"t afford to pay .. Would it be worth buying another Auto box?

The main piston can crack, but this causes slip in the forward gears, not reverse. Reverse slippage is due to a worn break band, and only a worn break band.

You can buy a decent reconditioned gearbox for less than that. See what Ashcroft Transmissions can do for you.

The problem with buying second hand, is you don't know if it's worse than yours, until after it's been fitted. If you can't rebuild another box yourself, then a reconditioned one is the best option.

I must admit when I talked to the bloke, he kept on telling me how truthful he was so I was suspicious.Anyway took it to my local Land Rover garage Paul Light Land Rover specialist this morning and he took it for a long run and when he came back he agreed it was the Reverse Brake Band but all the other gears are perfect and told me to keep on driving it until it gets worse. He reckons it will be okay for quite a few months especially as we don"t do much mileage. In the New Year will contact Ashcroft to see what they can do for me.
Cheers
