Hi, I've been lurking around for a short while so thought it was about time I started a project thread seeing as I can't keep my nose out of everyone else's. Any help and advice would be much appreciated!

A little bit about myself and the 90... I'm a painter in the motor trade and last year I bought myself a 1987 90, with a galvanised chassis and a 200tdi engine with the intentions of making it into a tidy one, to my own spec, hopefully being able to use it every day with the occasional playing around in the mud!

As you can see, plenty of work to be done! None of the lights work, fuel gauge doesn't work, bit of an oil leak on top of the engine and near the gearbox and plenty of dents and bad paintwork!

I've been trying to do as much as I can in the small amount of spare time I can find outside of work, painting jobs as foreigners, trying to decorate my first home and actually having a life. It's all being done in a friends unit (who I work with) and I'm using what Land Rover knowledge he has to help me along the way.

I managed to get it stripped down and a coat of gloss black on the wheels (priorities I know, but I managed to blag some spray booth time at work). However, I did want to sell the tyres and get some all terrain type ones so I can actually hear myself think when I'm driving. So if anyone is interested in 5 x Goodyear Wrangler Mtr's 15" then let me know (may also let the alloys go aswell for the right money, compomotive Dwfs).

I then finished stripping some bits, prepped and filled the tub where needed, painted the inside and primed the outside.

I've chosen Ford Stealth grey as my colour, with plenty of gloss black to go with. I've been painting other bits at work in my spare time ready for when the rebuild starts, which are currently being kept in the attic :p

I found myself a replacement bulkhead, because mine seems a bit too far gone on one side (can't find any pictures unfortunately). Anyway, the replacement one was in much better condition, I got it rubbed down ready for paint then went OTT with the sealer and stonechip before painting it which will hopefully keep the weather out! I haven't got a picture of it painted but here's one of it in primer and stonechip...

And that's about as far as I've got at the moment. I've managed to get the seatbox ready for shutz/paint tonight and one wing is ready for a bit of filler, I'm hoping to have both wings, seatbox and some cappings painted this weekend and then I can start stripping the old bulkhead.

Thanks for reading (if you've made it this far)

Lucky you are in the trade should save a fortune not having to pay someone to do it
looking forward to seeing more pics

Sounds like you've taken a lot on with your first project.
Hope this friend of yours is understanding if you're blocking his unit up with your landy.
Keep us posted with plenty of pics of your project

I'd love to subject my 90 to something like this, but as I use it as a daily driver and would have to pay full whack, it may remain a dream. Good luck and keep us posted.

Thats one positive I guess! The drawback is doing it 8 hours a day and then another 4 or so hours on an evening aswell! But I enjoy what I do so alls good :).

It sounds like you know him well haha. Will do!

I would love to do something along these lines for a living. Take peoples land rovers and do them how they want them to a reasonable budget for all purposes (unlike companies like twisted who seem to charge a small fortune and only deal with a lot of the newer stuff that they build for the London roads). If that's your landy in your pic, it looks pretty tidy!

Looking good! What a lovely colour, looking forward to seeing it in the daylight.

Thanks, it was a split decision between this grey and a deep metallic blue. However seeing as this is a solid colour, it makes life easier from a painters point of view.

Managed to get the other wing rubbed down tonight, so I shall hopefully get them filled where needed tomorrow. No pictures unfortunately but I took one of the bulkhead I painted last week.

Last night I managed to get both wings into primer and gave the battery box and underneath the seatbox a coat of shutz.

The insides of the wings will stay in primer. Just an extra layer of protection I guess, I can't justify a coat of paint when they can't be seen.

That's how it ended. Today should see some paint on the wings, seatbox, 4 rear cappings and the washer jet :).

Managed to get some painting done yesterday :D

Not the best pictures but I've managed to paint the wings, 4 rear cappings, seat box and the washer jet (it's all in the detail:rolleyes:)

Fingers crossed I can get the bulkhead swapped over and some bits built up over the coming week or so. I'm a bit out of my depth with the whole swapping of the bulkhead, especially I've got lights that don't work and other little issues to resolve along the way. But every day is a learning day!

Fit my rear cappings yesterday, decided to use black rivets as it's a little different than the normal colour coded or silver ones . I've also been slowly painting my chequerplate sections black, so I got the rear ones fitted also. What a pain in the ass they are to rub down!

Made a start on stripping the bulkhead ready to fit the new one. Can anyone advise me on why my fuel gauge may not be working? Whilst I've got the seatbox etc off I have easy access to the tank and the likes

Thanks!

looking great!
as for the fuel gauge,Could be the sender unit in the tank,

Thanks! Do you or does anyone have any idea of how many wires go to the sender? I need to get a picture of mine for reference but I think an earth may be missing....

This wire is tied up like this and there's another one or two under there not connected to anything

Liking the Stealth Gray. If I was repainting this shade of deep gray would be on my shortlist.

Thank you for the kind words! I was torn between a few colours so I hope I've made the right choice!

More updates this weekend, she currently sits with springs, turrets and shockers removed. Shockers will be going black and the springs and turrets yellow . They're fairly rusty so I've attacked them with the grinder and should be painted in the next few days.
What a pain in the ass they were to take off! Seized nuts, turret nuts snapped so I've got myself some new galvanised ones along with new suspension bushes for the rebuild.

Hopefully by the end of the weekend They will be pained and reassembled, and the front area of the chassis cleaned up painted black ready for the new bulkhead!

Cheers

So yesterday I got the springs painted yellow, and the turrets and shocks black. The yellow paint was terrible for coverage out of the gun and I didn't have enough to paint the turrets like I planned. I'll get myself some more ready to do the rear springs and radius arms. Also managed to get The front of the chassis painted black after a good wire brush and clean.

Ive sat the springs back in with new galvanised turret rings. I couldn't build up the rest as i couldn't find the right socket for shock absorber nuts. So tomorrow should see the rest of the front suspension built up, and hopefully the bulkhead sat back on. It'll then have to be wheeled out of the way to make room for a paying job on Tuesday/Wednesday night. So that might be it for the week as I'm off to Dublin on Friday morning on the p*ss.

With regards to my faulty fuel gauge this is what I have...

Is the wire in my hand supposed to be connected to the sender (middle pin?) It takes the same path of the other two wires into a sleeve with only them three. Or does it have two wires connected to it and no more?

Cheers

It's looking great so far, nice job. I hope I can do mine as well as yours is looking.

Thanks! I'm trying with it haha. Get yourself a project thread up when you start so I can have a nosey. I'm not a million miles away if you need some paintwork doing! Very competitive prices ;)
