Thanks to the folks who advised against the buying of a 2.0Mpi. As a result, we now own a 1996 Discovery with a 300Tdi under the bonnet. The engine has been replaced at some point with a reconditioned unit from the factory. We don't know when the unit was replaced and so don't know how many miles the replacement engine has done. Is there any way of finding out when the engine was fitted i.e. if I write to Land Rover will they have any such information?
The vehicle is generally in very good all round condition, but it seems a bit sluggish at low revs. When you pull away from a standstill or are just driving slowly in traffic and accelerate, the response seems a little slow. When the rev counter reaches around 2,500 r.p.m. it seems to hit a power band and off it goes. Is there a problem with the turbo perhaps, or is this normal behaviour with a Tdi? I have not owned a deisel motor before although I drive Lorries every day of my working life. Have I just got to get used to the different characteristics? By the way, our other vehicle at the moment is a 2.5 V6 ST24!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yes it is normal.
at 2500rpm the turbo kicks in don't worry you will get used to it :D

regarding the replacement engine you really need to know who changed the engine.
if it was land rover they should have all the info on file

look at the last owner, then look at his local landy dealer. you may get an answer from them.

The service book looks like Droitwich Land Rover have been responsible for the servicing and maintainance of the vehicle for a long time, so yes I will get in touch with them and see if they can be af any help.

As far as being a mondeo man at heart is concerned, I have owned a SIII 2.25 petrol and still own a 2 door 3.5 V8 Range Rover, although I took it apart about six years ago to put some sills on for the m.o.t. and got a bit carried away, but when it's finished it will be the dogs! Although at the time of purchasing the mondeo I hated the thought of owning/driving an 'ordinary' car, it has turned out to be a superb machine and I hope to own it for many years to come. I do still have the urge to get down and dirty (in a landie) and I promised my son that we would have another Land Rover when he asked not so long ago.

Like I said, I owned a SIII for a few years so I know all about noisy AND slow, ice on the inside aswell as the outside, getting your leg ****ed on every time you brake or go round a corner etc etc etc.............

could you put a psi powerbox on a disco or is it just a range rover thing

also if you wanna drive something sluggish try driving a freight train
it takes 2 mins to get the brakes to release LOL
