were do i start fitted new valve block today p38 spares £500 job now the car wont pump up,removed pump and inspected piston and seal that i fitted two days ago all good, but pump has been running for long periods due to leaks and when i took it out today to swap block over the pump was too hot to touch, then i tested pump direct with 12v and it worked but seemed slow, fitted back to car and it ran for 10 min got very hot again and shut off,no movement in suspension,is the thermal cut out in the pump that would make sense to me.what should i look at next?

Looks like your pump is seized, needs a lot of energy to run, gets hot and shuts off.
Other thing could be the engine, is there any play or loud noise when running?

Are your sure that the grub screw securing the pump motor spindle to the piston is properly screwed down on the flat side of the spindle? I'm just wondering that is this is loose the motor would over-run (causing heat) but cause the piston to move slowly...

i'm lost, i'm sure everything with the pump went proper,i did pump the other day and it ran alot quieter than before but still ran for too long which suggested another leak:doh: done leak check nothing, but car drops slightly overnight with boot open, should i try another pump ? or shall i torch it?

Bummer dude.

Have you had a look at the rsw solutions web site? They've got loads of tips and hints for testing the air suspension bits including jumping various bits to test the pump etc?

Also rangerovers.net has quite a good section on the air suspension.

You're not having much luck with this, are you? When is it you're going on holiday? Today?

yeah holiday is today, the only thing i can think is the pump has been getting pummeled with heat ,it did finally run for 10 mins last night got hot cut out did put a little air in but not noticable untill i pulled a pipe out of valve block.

Did you check the inlet and exhaust valves in the cylinder head? A small piece of debris under either will render pump useless.

yeah i'm not too far from rpi engineering, but you have to wonder if a second hand one will be any better than i got?if i pull this off i'll deserve my holiday.

no wammers it is old pump with new seal and cylinder, valve block is brand new,and pumps been running alot and getting hot,but pump seemed a bit lifeless running, when i took pump out yesterday to do block it was red hot coud'nt touch it.

A 2nd hand one would probly be good enough to get you going for the holiday though. As long as it works, of course!

Then you could have a go at overhauling it using your new bits when you got back mebbe...

Then it maybe that the pump comutator or brushes are on their way out. The new seal is overloading a tired motor. If the brushes or comutator are badly worn this would cause the motor to run hot and give you the lazy pumping.
