Anyone know anything about this D2...?

Bit strange posting in this section, generally camped in the Freelander section

Anyway, thinking of replacing my FL1 with a D2 (I have a FL2 for weekends and the mrs to drive), I use the FL1 for work, but the D2 is just massively bigger, plus was thinking of using one for camping (in), I'm 6ft, and just don't fit in the FL.

So, does anyone know anything about this car? It's in Sheffield, the seat colour is horrible but thats the least of my concerns. Apparently it's been maintained at a specialist for the last few years.

Despite running a sheet metal fabrication business, I don't enjoy spending my weekends welding my car up (yes i know i'm probably looking at the wrong car in that case...), but any info or suggestions are welcome. Got the value of my Fl1 to spend (about 4k) on a D2 TD5.

You dont like the cream leather?? Really!?
With £4k that will get you a nice example, remember to keep a little spare £ £ for any repairs.
Drive a manual.and auto and see which you prefer, both quite different. Likewise, look at a few dont buy the first one you see.

Looks smart enough & I actually like the cream leather. It's what you don't see in the advert that you really do need to see; underneath. You'd really need to have a look yourself or, get an AA/RAC inspection would be money well spent.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of cream leather, black/grey/blue (i had blue in an e36 bmw once) is fine, just for some reason don't like cream!!

But anyway yeah, the search resumes

Is there anything against high mileage D2's if they've been serviced and maintained properly? Or am I better off setting aside a good chunk of spare cash if looking at a high miler??

Reason I ask, found a lovely 01/Y plate auto in alveston red, but with 160k on the clock...

mileage is ok really if been looked after, the most things are fluids, sunroofs leak, but not that hard to fix, as said try manual v auto to see which you prefer, 7 seat v 5 seat, some have ace system some don't,
but the biggest factor is the chassis, mainly the rear section, have a good look about, they are there, just being right place right time, ive had 5 now, it does what i want without having loads of money in a car,

The single most important thing to check on a TD5 is the chassis, particularly from the rear axle to the rear bumper.

It is not at all unknown for the seller to be blissfully unaware that his cars' chassis is like lace, literally.

On the more general note of can they take the mileage, yes without a shadow of doubt, BUT, you will almost certainly need to play catch-up with the maintenance IRRESPECTIVE of what the service book says.

If you have a budget of £4000 I would advise you to spend no more than £2500 on the initial purchase price, leaving a fair chunk to bring her up to par.

YOU WILL ALWAYS NEED TO FIX SOMETHING ! However, once sorted out they are a lovely vehicle.

Just an example of prices:

I bought my 2001my TD5 ES manual about 10 days ago. I paid £1400 for her and she is in the process of being fixed up. She has needed 1 x window regulator (£25); 1 x radio CD (free from a mate); full service inc filters and fluids (£100) & 1 x 2nd hand pas pump (£20) .

So I reckon she owes me about £1550. She has GREY leather, good sounds - now!; remapped to 165bhp and I really like her.



You don't have to spend anywhere near the top of your budget to get a good'un. Be patient and be prepared to travel.

PS This is just my opinion based on experience, but put NO faith in either garage warranties of "Land Rover" specialists - I'll explain why if you need it.

Don't worry, no need to explain the quality of garage warranties, I always negotiate down without the warranty included...

I'm always wary of the ones that seem too cheap and tend to not even bother looking at them, like I'd have expected that your £1400 sounds cheap, but probably just luck of the draw!

I'd prefer an ES, I like a bit of comfort and spec (not to mention heated front screen and seats are a lifesaver in winter).

It took me 2 months to find it and it didn't start out at that price, it was initially on the market for £2500.

God that look near identical to the one I had except my light bar and lights were black.. spooky!
