any help with priceing how much job will cost?? p38 1999

hi,just had a nasty engine oil leak appear over night ,been told probly the enginr oil cooler,does anyone know roughly how much to get it exchanged labour wise as ive been quoted £130 for a new cooler but i would like to know roughly how much labour will cost ,

any help appreiciated

could it just be the oil cooler pipes, as they are known to leak.

find exactly what is leaking first before yer start spending yer dosh.

if it is coming from the oil cooler it might just be a 30p 'o' ring wot needs replacing or maybe just a connection tightened up. get under and have a look see

Fairly easy job IF the hose connections at the cooler are not siezed. Assuming they come undone easily allow 2 hours labour max. including a break for cuppa and a smoke!

I presume it's a V8 and not a diesel.

well thats a quick response thanks guys,wel i sort of know this guy with a garage and i just got off phone to him.i gonna pop her in tomoz and he will tell me what it is leaking no charge,so im hoping its just a 30p o ring but hey lives never that good to me,

does anyone know to what side of the main rad is the engine oil cooler is located,if your standing infront looking into engine bay is it to the right an the top with 2 silver hoses going in ,or is it to the left at the bottom with 2 silver hoses ,i have leak from the left of rad at bottom not sure if this is autobox cooler or engine oil cooler,


any of your knowledge appriciated

The engine oil cooler is the one on the top and the autobox cooler directly below it. Try and wipe some of the oil with your finger, if it's brown/black it's from the engine cooler. If it's reddish, it's coming from the transmission cooler. It's not uncommon for the transmission coolers to leak also. I have had to replace both on my 4.6

The coolers are about the same width as the radiator and are bolted onto the front of the radiator-directly behind the aircon condenser, which is at the front directly behind the grille and has two electric fans bolted on. Remove the slam panel which has the bonnet catches attached, by removing the 4 M8 bolts either end and you will have a better view from above of the coolers

who know maybe a crap pipe etc ,are they a nightmare to work on i mean do you have to take rad out etc,

hi all,well i couldnt get it into the garage today as he was packed so i set about diagnosing the leak,2 cans of holts later and it turned out to be the engine oil cooler the top skinny cooler ,

which leads me onto my next question for you experts...
who actually stocks theese as i have rang all morning and no one has and when i change it do i need any extra new stuff aswell like washer bolts nuts etc or do i use the ones off the old cooler,
and finally ...will oil comes peeing out all over the place once i undo the 2 pipes,

cheers zzr ,rang them today and they do have in stock !!!
may go down there tomorrow and get one but just trying to convince myself into doing the 140 mile round trip.
have you had any experiance of fitting one of theese ,it looks straight foward but do you know if oil is gonna being coming everywhere when i dissconnect the 2 pipes,or is it a straight swap but use new o rings and clean pipe connections,

Try Rimmer Bros-that's where I got mine from, if they don't have them try Famous Four. The cooler comes complete with new "O" rings. The pipe nuts on mine were a pain to undo as the nuts are steel and the fitting on the cooler aluminium and they tend to "weld" theirselves a bit so dose them with Plus Gas before starting. The bolts holding the cooler on are bog standard M8 hex and should be o.k. You will have to remove the aircon condenser bolts, 2 at the top and 2 at the bottom-accessible through the lower grille. This will allow you to tip the condenser forward for better access. You will lose some oil but not much. Part no. for the cooler (For 4.0ltr) is ESR 3204 £124,57 incl VAT.from Rimmers + post.

Could try ringing Autopost in Balham 020 8675 4022 or British Parts, Stevenage 01438 354816 (Open Sat. till 1.00). If the nuts are shot when you remove them from the cooler, the part nos. are ESR 2697 @ £19 and ESR 4415 @ £16 from British Parts. *TIP* If you remove the hose from the bottom of the oil pump (The r.h. one) don't overtighten it as there is not much "Meat" around the thread in the casting and it will crack and you will need a new front cover/oil pump at around £300

ESR 2697 & ESR 4415 are the complete new hoses.
Didn't make it clear in the last post.

cheers irishrover for that i feel more confident.i might be lucky with my cooler as seems quite accessible .its sitting right at the top so may just leave condenser bolted in and just take off the two top brackets which gives it some play to get the oil cooler out ,just to confirm the engine oil cooler is the skinny one between the 2 large ones? as i dont want to get wrong one !!!!is there a differece between the esr 3204 and 3205 ? ?
