ok any one ever striped out and rebuilt rear calipers before?

i got the urge as im off and got a bit of time start to do a few jobs on the old girl i started yesterday with the glow plugs and continued with the bump stops and mud flaps on the old girl.

took the wheels off and found the rear calipers not to good and need a bit of love and care, i will be getting some repair kits and i have a caliper hone but i need some advice as i never done these before and want to do it so i dont have to rebuild them again in a month.

ok i see how you remove them that dont look to hard.

  1. how do i remove the pistons? dont want to damage them incase the new ones not correct
  2. what is the best way to clean the rust off the callipers? as they are off i might as well clean the rust off of them and make them look better.
  3. would i be better off cleaning if its a wire brush would i be better off removeing the old pistons 1st or not?
  4. what is the best type of paint to paint them with as i think its rust thats caused the issue of the pistons sticking
  5. if i split the caliper id ther a gasket i need to place between them, i ask now so i can order the gaskets or what ever they are before i start.
my plan is to drop them off and clean and paint in one evening and ten refit 48 hrs later once paint has cured, i also need to replace the pipe to one side as its corroded what are the union size's as ill get new ones before i make a new one

thanks for your time

1. Remove the pads and press the brake pedal the pistons do one at a time but stop it from popping out fully as you will have lost pressure to the caliper so you won't be able to pump the other piston out.
2. Wire brush.
3. Just clean the piston area with brake cleaner solvent.
4. Hammerrite (red) it's the piston the gets rusty, and don't paint the piston area the calipers are plated but if they are that rusty then get replacements.
5. It's not recomended that you DIY and split calipers as there could be safety issues with putting them back together.

you don,t need to hone calipers seals dont move as brake cyinder seals ,you would need to strip completely (into halves) allways fit genuine or oem seal and piston kits ,dont refit old pistons unless chrome is perfect, pressure seal square solid section is straight forward lubricate with clean brake fluid ,outer dirt seal steel backing ring is tricky you need flat plate just big enough to cover and tap squarely and gently home fit pistons and bolt halves together ensuring mating surfaces are clean and transfer port seals are located properly tighten evenly, new cdalipers are only £40-£50
