I have a strange scraping noise on the front of the Freelander -

2006 Freelander TD4 Mk 1 97,500 miles not much off road

These are the symptoms:-

Doesn't make the noise when both sides of the car jacked up and the wheels spun - front or back.
When driving doesn't make the noise much below 15 miles an hour
Noise speeds up with road speed
If its already making the noise and you slow down to about ten or below it stops.
Sounds a bit like a brake wear indicator
Touching the brakes makes no difference nor if you stamp hard on them
Turning corners makes no difference
Full lock in the car park slowly does not make that CV worn clicking noise
It stops when slowed right down - starts again over about 15 mph

What I have tried:-

New pads fitted (needed them anyway) at the front
Both sides cleaned (twice) and checked for stones stuck / rust caught between back plate and disc - checked for any debris pad guide touching the disc.
Checked for wear signs on components at the front around the brakes
Checked the back and front turning wheels as fast as I can by hand
Checked for CV clicking noise on full lock
Searched this forum as much as I could

Other things I have done recently unrelated:-

New GKN VCU and GKN bearings from Island 4x4 (6 months ago)
Is not a whining noise (that could be me!)

Things I'm thinking:-
Could be the front driveshafts - despite no clicking noise from CV joints
Could be a bearing in the dreaded gearbox/IRD drive

Open to any suggestions (really) - as I am at a loss.

Regards

I have had a very similar thing, I had a very slight bit of play in my prop uj's, replaced them and the noise stopped. When I stripped them down they were totally knackered but only had the smallest amount of play when I checked them. They might be worth a look.
