Hello all you helpful Landy owners and thanks for all the good advice that I've read on the forum so far. My name is Bucks and I live in south east London. I've got a 2002 Disco which despite the maintanence that it regularly seems to require, is still a pleasure to drive.
However I have the common intermittent fault with the auto box going into limp home mode. My local mechanic has told me for the last couple of years that it was a dodgy solenoid in the gearbox that would cost a fortune to replace, for a long time it only seemed to come on whenever we went near a puddle but then became more persistent. Anyway I read the advice on the forum about the XYZ switch, wiggled the gear selector around as much as possible and changed the airflow meter (on the advice of a mechanic friend), and the problem seemed to clear. That was until i took it into a main dealer at Tonbridge Kent for a basic service this week.
I told them about the problems and they said that they would look at it, instead thay came back to me with a long list of jobs that needed doing (with their labour and parts I was looking at about £2500 to £3000).
When I picked the car up 3 days later (parts apparently) most of the list still needed doing and my gearbox fault was back without any mention of the problem. As I went in to complain the service department were all scuttling away home quicker than you could say auto box fault.
I ignored their price for a new suspension airbag (£400 +) and bought a new one (made by the same people who make the OE) for £87, fitting was easy, even for me, the only thing i had to do different to the workshop manual instr was to jack the chassis up a little to accomodate the new bag.
My main problem now is after a humungous battle to remove one of the rear trailing arm bushes I can't get the new one in. HELP !
