Freelander 1 Another key question (sorry)

Not suggesting you should do it but the cheapest option is to take the transponder out of your good key and stick it to the steering column near the key slot. Then buy the key blank and get it cut.
Total cost £3.98 plus the cost of cutting the key.
 
Thanks I am trying to avoid going down that route I have been trying to find a blank key with the transponder already in but at the mo I can not seem to find one . But the question still stands I know it is a long winded way of doing it but would it work?
 
I thought Timpson do a replacement key with Transponder. That was my impression when I enquired at Sainsburyo_O I have two keys one for ignition and the other for the drivers door lock replacement. The choice for me was due to financial reasons when I saw the price for drivers door lock with or without transponder.
 
they do, I spoke the guy who manages a branch near me who said he would do it and was thinking it would be cheaper to do it this way
 
I've only got one key for my car which I bought from a lady who had owned it for over ten years. How does someone loose their spare key? From now on, I will always ask if there is a working spare before I buy a car cos it's such a bugger to get a replacement. Does anyone know how much Timpsons charge for a spare transponder key?

I'll only buy a car with both keys supplied. Unless I can negotiate a larger price discount, than the cost of a replacement key from a dealer.

Some months on but I too am seeking a spare key having bought a Freelander 1, TD4 with only one key and fob - found a replacement fob cover on line as the buttons are knackered (£3.99 on eBay) but, Timpsons want £65 for a new key programmed (not bad I thought) but have quoted £105 in addition for a new fob as well. Think I will get the key done and risk only one fob (at least it will have a new cover and battery, plus you can get in and out if it fails) until I can find somewhere a little more reasonable.
 
Thanks Nodge all I need to do is find someone in my neck of the woods with a hawkeye:rolleyes: .One thing that did occur to me is it just the hawkeye that can do it ? my son in law owns his own garage would the diagnostic equipment he have be able to do it ?

Some garage equipment can program fobs and keys too.

Interesting. My understanding is/was that the remote fob is preprogrammed with a set frequency at manufacture and it's the ECU that has to be reprogrammed to suit a new fob. So if you only have one fob and buy a spare, the ECU can be reprogrammed for the new one but then the old one won't work because it's frequency no longer matches. From reading posts on here, that's what others seem to think too.

The CCU is programmed to the fob, but it's not a frequency it's coded to, it's a data packet. The fobs all work on the same frequencies, they just send out a different data packet.
So the CCU needs to be told to learn the new data packet, and recognise it in future. The Freelander's CCU can have up to 4 fobs stored at any one time.

The key's transponder uses the same learning process as the CCU, but is for the immobilizer instead. Again four keys can be stored in the alarm ECU.
From memory. If you lose a key or fob and want to have 2 again. Then at the time of programming, all keys/ fobs need to be available, as programming new, erases previously stored keys/ fobs.
 
Is that cheaper than buying them seperately from ebay?
Tbh I am not sure there seems to be a bit of confusion as to which transpon

der I have in my key from what I can find out it could be one of a few . I need to find out which one , which brings me to another question at the base of my key there seems to be an opening for lack of a better word what is this for ? the transponder ??

I think most Freelanders have the transponder in the key. If you prise it apart the transponder is a little thing sitting near the blade of the key.
