V692EVW Dodgy MOT?

I paid £1500 for it, clearly I didnt expect to get a 'mint condition' 18 year old landy and I had done a bit of research on this site before hand (re issues etc). All in all I wasnt overly bothered about its condition given that it had a new MOT I assumed it would at least be 'safe' to use and I was happy to get the leaky roof, leaky steering box (and the million other niggles sorted).
I have just this minute contacted the seller and await his response.
mot doesnt mean much even if properly done, i see cars that are useable now but you know will be scrap next year, a car dealers mot is usually nearer the line as the mot garage will be getting a lot of work from the dealer, mechanicals is all fixable patching rot is fighting a losing expensive battle

I stand by my comment, an egg sized hole will be an ostrich egg hole by the time a wire wheel has got hold of it

indeed, i bought a 88 series over 25 x years ago with a new ticket, was very inexperienced then in what to look for

old neighbour who knew his stuff had a look when i got home and said don’t drive it , had it reinspected and failed its mot miserably , did report the company and MOT station to vosa

as i couldn’t afford another landy i ended up putting a half decent second hand chassis on it , when neighbour and i lifted the body off there were more plates on it than the 7 th bridge , was painted with bitumen

company was in biggin hill, jail lane

was a massive learning curve for me and the neighbour really helped me out, learnt a lot

All good and well, but I would still have someone inspect it prior to that
remember you cant polish a turd
Best to find out what you have got now and bail before getting in too deep
Not what any owner wants to hear but dont be fooled by these guys remember they have tried to fleece you once.

Seems like an admission of guilt if they offering to sort things for nothing and trying to cover their tracks

Id like to have it inspected but have no idea where to take it? It was looked over at the garage, do I take it back there and get them to do a 'formal' report? do I need to find a 'specialist' landrover garage? Ive no idea what to do now.
I have agreed to the MOT station doing the 'repair' job (tho I wont hold my breathe on a decent job, itll be a quick patch up). I was under the impression that I need to give the 'dealer' ample opportunity to rectify the issue? not sure where i got that info from.
God this is giving me a bloody headache!

I think ideally id like to just get my money back but I dont if I can even do that no ive agreed to have it repaired? :(:(

I appreciate that, sadly as an inexperienced landy buyer (or any other car for that matter) my only advise with regard to safety is an MOT. I have no other form of assurance with any motor. I have to hope that the MOT is of a reasonable quality.

You said yourself that he's a car dealer they by law have to supply a warranty. Pardon the terminology but man up and demand your money back if that is what you want, by agreeing to pay for repairs they are admitting liability. It really boils my pee when a bloke in the know takes advantage when a woman comes along. I've had several rows with garages who've done similar when my wife takes her car in.

Are you a member of the AA or RAC?
I believe that they will do inspections, probably for a price for non-members.

I would take it to another MOT station but make no mention of the rot and put it through another MOT
might be the best £50 you ever spend

@Land_girl ......I see you're in Essex........if you're not far from Grays/Basildon I could MOT it tomorrow afternoon or Saturday morning........at least then you'de get a proper test and know exactly what it needs ..or doesn;t..........Failing that check with your local council , a lot operate a MOT station for their own use and members of the public are welcomed

Certain MOT garages can have very Lax guys at the Helm.

My "cheap" range rover had an MOT just before i bought it.

Apparently it flew through without issue.

After spending some time under it i found both bottom and top ball joints were ****ed.

And a definite Fail.

However Rust is par the course with Discos.

It pays to have a good look underneath before committing.

Thanks you all so much for your help and advice, it really is appreciated.
I have 'manned up' and asked for my money back. I have had a number of replies... wont bore you with all the details but hes tried every trick in the book. Says it was a personal car and not one from his business (unfortunately for him he gave me a headed paper business receipt)... tried to suggest that the person who 'jacked it up' to look at it might have damaged it (told him i can get proof that is not the case), reckons he'll make a loss as he'll have to advertise it again (even tho it was advertised on a free website) also told him ive put £400 worth of tyres on it and his garage said they would weld it for free, so technically he'll have gained not lost, the log book has been sent off (who cares), the sale was legal and described accurately, the 'corrosion' was clearly documented (on the mot advisory yes), he told me before i brought it that it has corrosion (plain lie). the list goes on!
Now sent me a message saying he thinks he has a solution so can i call him.
